Job Description

Staff Backend Engineer - Application Core Services, Stacks

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Staff Backend Engineer - Application Core Services, Stacks in Canada.

This role sits at the heart of large-scale cloud observability systems that power critical customer and internal workflows across a global, remote-first engineering organization. You will work on highly distributed backend systems responsible for provisioning, configuring, and operating customer environments at scale within a complex cloud platform ecosystem. The position focuses on building and maintaining reconciliation and control-plane services that ensure consistency across multi-region infrastructure and product layers. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams spanning product, platform, infrastructure, and operations to deliver reliable and observable systems. This is a high-impact engineering role where your work directly influences customer experience, system stability, and operational efficiency. You will thrive in an environment that values autonomy, technical excellence, and iterative problem-solving on mission-critical services.

Accountabilities:
  • Design, build, and operate distributed backend systems that manage lifecycle workflows for cloud-based customer environments, ensuring reliability, scalability, and consistency across platforms.
  • Develop reconciliation and control-plane services that detect and resolve configuration drift across systems such as cloud deployments, product configurations, and internal state stores.
  • Collaborate across multiple engineering squads to maintain alignment between provisioning systems, deployment pipelines, and cloud infrastructure operations.
  • Improve system observability, reliability, and operational efficiency by enhancing dashboards, alerts, runbooks, and incident response mechanisms.
  • Manage rollout processes for configuration updates, plugins, dashboards, and versioned services across multiple regions and environments.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, supporting incident response, troubleshooting cross-service failures, and driving post-incident improvements.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions, technical design reviews, and long-term simplification of backend systems and workflows.
  • Work closely with product, infrastructure, and support teams to translate ambiguous requirements into robust, scalable engineering solutions.
Requirements:
  • 6+ years of backend or distributed systems engineering experience, ideally in SaaS or cloud-native environments.
  • Strong professional experience with Go (Golang), with ability to work across backend services and platform-level systems.
  • Proven experience building or operating large-scale distributed systems (e.g., multi-tenancy, high availability, scalability, data consistency).
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code and deployment tooling (e.g., Terraform, Helm, Jsonnet, Argo, or similar).
  • Experience working with stateful systems, reconciliation loops, or eventual consistency patterns.
  • Strong ability to design, deliver, and iterate on complex systems in an autonomous, remote-first environment.
  • Experience collaborating across teams, communicating technical tradeoffs, and driving alignment on system design decisions.
  • Experience with incident response processes and writing clear, actionable postmortems.
  • Bonus: experience with TypeScript/Node.js, Kubernetes operators, or SaaS provisioning and lifecycle systems.
Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation package including base salary, performance bonus, and equity (RSUs).
  • Fully remote-first work environment with global collaboration opportunities.
  • Flexible working model with strong emphasis on autonomy and work-life balance.
  • 30 days annual leave, including designated company shutdown days.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including health and wellness support.
  • Learning and development support, including access to modern engineering tools and AI-assisted development workflows.
  • Opportunity to work on large-scale open-source and cloud-native technologies with global impact.
  • Inclusive and diverse culture focused on trust, transparency, and engineering excellence.
