About This Position

Teach lecture and laboratory courses in General Physics, College Physics, and Conceptual Physics, depending on departmental needs.
Deliver engaging, learner-focused instruction using in-person, hybrid, and online modalities as appropriate.
Incorporate instrumentation into the laboratory classroom including the setup of physics labs, maintain existing lab equipment and assist in selecting new lab equipment as needed.
Serve as program coordinator and advisor for the Associate in Engineering transfer program.
Maintain accurate and timely records of student performance, attendance, and assessment data. Contribute to curriculum development and participate in departmental assessment and program review.
Maintain posted office hours and provide academic support and guidance to students.
Participate in professional development, division and college committees, and campus activities.
Promote an equitable and inclusive learning environment consistent with the values of Sandhills Community College.
Mastery of Subject Matter
a. Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of their discipline.
b. Display an ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of their discipline.
c. Connect their subject matter with related fields.
d. Stay current in their subject matter through professional development, involvement in professional organizations, and attending professional meetings, conferences, or workshops.
e. Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate.
Teaching Performance
a. Teach a course load appropriate to their discipline.
b. Use a variety of delivery modes (traditional classroom, online, hybrid, weekend, 8-week, 5-week, and evening).
c. Teach across multiple locations (SCC Pinehurst Campus, SCC Hoke Campus, Moore High School campus).
d. Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize documented student learning.
e. Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students.
f. Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.
g. Employ available instructional technology, i.e. the internet, interactive technology, when appropriate.
h. Encourage the development of communication skills and higher order thinking skills through appropriate assignments.
i. Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives.
j. Incorporate core competencies into the curriculum.
k. Develop, update, and post course syllabi in a timely manner.
Evaluation of Student Learning
a. Establish meaningful student learning outcomes for courses/programs.
b. Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward student learning outcomes.
c. Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning.
d. Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters to division administrator each semester according to established deadlines.
e. Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances.
Required education and experience:
Master’s degree in physics, or a Master’s degree and at least 18 graduate hours in physics.
Evidence of effective teaching or potential for excellence in undergraduate instruction.
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred education and experience:
Community college teaching experience.
Experience with physics laboratory setup, safety procedures and management.
Ability to teach intro-level astronomy course.
Familiarity with instructional technologies including MS Office and Canvas.
Demonstrated experience with active learning strategies and student success initiatives.
Experience working with diverse populations, including first-generation college students and students requiring academic support.
