Summary Objective
The Controls Installation Superintendent provides frontline leadership over field automation wiring, controls installation, and electrical integration systems for Stellar Energy's modular chiller commissioning programs. This role leads the field execution of customer-specific controls specifications, ensuring seamless energization, I/O testing, and commissioning of control wiring systems, instrumentation packages, and electrical interfaces that meet diverse client requirements while maintaining Stellar Energy's 100% performance test passage rate. As both a technical authority and modular construction/commissioning team leader, the Controls Installation Superintendent will advise the Sr Dir of Services on Automation / Controls team needs and orchestrates the installation of complex automation wiring systems across multiple concurrent site installation and commissioning projects, interprets varied client control specifications, and ensures flawless integration of building automation systems (BAS), DDC controls, and monitoring packages. This position drives installation efficiency, consistency, and specification compliance while assisting in the resource planning for growth.
Essential Functions
- Drive controls installation wiring strategy - establish standardized installation methodologies for diverse automation and control wiring packages across modular chiller platforms, develop efficient workflow processes that accommodate varying client specifications, and ensure seamless execution across multiple concurrent builds
- Command specification interpretation - serve as technical authority translating customer automation specifications into executable wiring plans, analyze client BAS requirements (BACnet, Modbus, LON, proprietary protocols), and ensure installation teams accurately implement customer-specific control architectures
- Orchestrate installation operations - oversee controls wiring installation across all modular chiller production lines, coordinate material staging for customer-specific control components, manage installation sequencing to maintain production flow, and ensure on-time delivery of fully commissioned automation systems
- Lead controls integration excellence - direct installation of building automation interfaces, DDC control panels, sensor packages, valve actuators, VFD communications, and monitoring systems specific to each customer specification, ensuring proper termination, labeling, and testing protocols
- Ensure specification compliance - implement rigorous quality checks verifying automation wiring matches approved submittal drawings, customer specification requirements, and performance criteria, maintaining zero-defect installation standards across all client programs
- Build controls installation capability - develop workforce expertise in diverse automation protocols and wiring standards, train installation teams on customer-specific requirements, and establish cross-training programs to handle varied BAS platforms and control systems
- Manage client-specific materials - coordinate procurement of customer-specified automation components (controllers, sensors, actuators, communication modules), manage inventory of diverse control system parts, and ensure correct materials are staged for each client's unique requirements
- Optimize installation efficiency - identify opportunities to standardize automation wiring practices across similar specifications, develop pre-fabricated harness solutions where applicable, and eliminate waste in custom automation installation processes
- Drive testing and commissioning - establish comprehensive functional testing protocols for automation systems, verify proper communication with BAS networks, validate sensor accuracy and control sequences, and ensure all automation wiring performs per customer acceptance criteria
- Maintain documentation excellence - ensure accurate as-built drawings for all controls wiring installations, create customer-specific O&M documentation, maintain test records and commissioning reports, and provide complete controls system documentation packages for engineering handover
- Collaborate with stakeholders - partner with sales/engineering to review controls specifications during proposal phase, coordinate with customers on control system requirements and modifications, and interface with BAS vendors and commissioning agents to ensure successful integration
- Champion continuous improvement - analyze recurring client specification patterns to develop efficient installation standards, implement lessons learned from complex controls projects, and drive process improvements that reduce installation time while improving quality

This position will work out of our Jacksonville, FL facilities. This position is not approved for telecommuting or working remotely.
Work Environment
This position operates in a high-volume modular chiller manufacturing facility executing diverse controls wiring installations for multiple clients simultaneously. The Controls Installation Superintendent maintains presence across production areas where control panels are being built, controls wiring is being installed, and systems are being tested and commissioned. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works throughout the shop floor coordinating installation activities and is sometimes exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee occasionally travels to customer facilities or BAS vendor locations for specification reviews, commissioning support, or issue resolution. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. This role requires managing multiple client specifications concurrently while ensuring each controls system meets unique customer requirements without compromising production schedules.
Physical Demands

This position requires regular production floor presence to oversee automation wiring installations, inspect workmanship, and troubleshoot system integration issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands for detailed inspection of wiring terminations and control system components; and reach with hands and arms into control panels and equipment compartments. The employee is occasionally required to sit during specification review and documentation work; climb ladders or platforms to access elevated equipment; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl to inspect low-mounted sensors and field devices. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Ability to visually inspect wire terminations, verify color coding, read instrumentation labels, and review control drawings requires strong attention to detail. Specific vision abilities required include close vision for precision wiring inspection, color vision for wire identification and sensor verification, depth perception for panel work, and ability to adjust focus between drawings and installed equipment.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is an exempt, salaried position requiring significant time commitment to meet client delivery schedules and production demands. Standard hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with regular extended hours, evening, and weekend work required to support automation system commissioning, customer witness testing, resolution of specification issues, and critical project deadlines. Flexibility in accommodating customer schedules for factory acceptance tests and commissioning activities is required.
Travel
Regular travel to support site installation efforts across the US. This travel is to facilitate specification coordination, install and commissioning, or issue resolution; BAS vendor locations for training or technical collaboration; or industry events focused on building automation technologies (estimated 40% annually).
Required Education and Experience.
- AA degree in Electrical Technology, Automation Technology, Building Automation, Controls Engineering, or related field; BS degree preferred; or equivalent education and experience
- 5+ years of progressive experience in automation controls installation, BAS integration, or HVAC controls with minimum 5 years in supervisory or management roles
- Proven track record managing installation of diverse building automation systems in manufacturing or equipment OEM environment with multiple concurrent client specifications
- Expert knowledge of building automation protocols including BACnet (IP and MSTP), Modbus (RTU and TCP), LON, and common proprietary systems (Trane, Carrier, York, JCI)
- Extensive experience with DDC control panel installation, low-voltage control wiring, instrumentation termination, sensor installation, and communication network configuration
- Comprehensive knowledge of National Electrical Code Article 725 (Class 1/Class 2 circuits), control circuit design, and low-voltage wiring practices
- Experience with testing and commissioning automation systems, verifying control sequences, and conducting functional performance tests
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar for reviewing drawings and creating as-built docs
Preferred Education and Experience
- BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Controls Engineering, or related field
- Manufacturer certifications in major BAS platforms (EX: Johnson Controls, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Honeywell, Trane, Carrier)
- Certified Building Automation Professional or similar industry credential
- Experience with factory-built equipment automation systems in modular manufacturing environment
- Knowledge of chiller control systems, compressor staging, VFD integration, refer safeties
- Familiarity with advanced control strategies including optimization algorithms, demand limiting, and energy management sequences
- ISO 9001 quality system experience in custom manufacturing environment
- Experience with customer factory acceptance testing (FAT) protocols and witnessed commissioning procedures
- Background in industrial instrumentation including pressure transducers, temperature sensors, flow meters, and analytical devices
- Knowledge of industrial Ethernet networks, managed switches, and network troubleshooting for control systems
- Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement training
- Experience with HVAC commissioning standards (ASHRAE Guideline 0, NEBB, ACG
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
Must have dependable transportation, valid driver's license, clean background check and random drug screening consent. Must be available for occasional travel to customer sites for commissioning support or specification resolution.
