Position Summary

The maintenance technician I organizes, implements, and conducts maintenance at Metro Waste Authority facilities in and around the Des Moines metro area in a safe manner to maximize efficiency in operations. The Maintenance Technician is responsible for rolling and stationary equipment as well as building and grounds maintenance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintain buildings, grounds, and equipment in a safe and operational condition. Ensuring all required service, repair and maintenance records are up to date.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems and able to operate equipment to move material throughout facilities.
  • Assist with staff training on the preventative maintenance program.
  • Perform all aspects of industrial and facilities maintenance including but not limited to snow removal, grounds upkeep (mowing, landscaping, litter removal, etc.), building repairs, equipment maintenance/ service, and ensuring compliance with all safety standards to maintain a secure and functional environment.
  • Maintains organization of shop tools and parts inventories, adhering to facility cleanliness, 5S organizational systems and facility standard work procedures while maintaining a vision for continuous improvement.
  • Uses various jacks and hoists to remove parts, disassembles unit and inspects parts for wear using micrometers, calipers, and gauges; repairs or replaces parts such as conveyor belts, gears, valves, rollers, motors, gearboxes, and bearings using mechanic’s hand tools; overhauls or replaces blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps; rewires ignition systems, lights, and panels; mends damaged components by hammering out or filling in dents, painting, and welding broken parts; uses acetylene torch to weld, modify, and/or fabricate parts components. .
  • Uses shop tools and equipment, including drills, grinders, micrometers, reamer, welder, plasma cutter, torque multiplier, and grinding machines to make necessary repairs to valves, gears, inserts, pistons, pumps, generators, alternators, injectors, brakes, steering, suspension, radiators, tires, transmission, and related parts and system; attains precise set limits and tolerance using precision measuring instruments, devices, tools, and machines.
  • Responsible for shop tools and material inventory
  • Utilize computer applications to track all maintenance activities, which include preventive maintenance, general repairs, capital projects, work orders, parts inventory, vehicle inspections, equipment hours, downtime tracking.
  • Tests and drive MWA vehicles and equipment to diagnose equipment malfunctions and system interaction; determines if parts, components, and/or systems are broken or improperly adjusted and need to be repaired or replaced.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as needed/assigned

Travel

This position requires occasional travel in and around the Des Moines metro area

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3 years’ related experience; or, equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical on vehicles and machinery.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems dealing with up to and including 480V 3 phase.
  • Knowledge of automation practices including PLC’s, VFD’s, motor starters, and relays.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics
  • Knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Experience with shop software systems
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) or other shop software
  • Welding experience
  • Overhead door repair/maintenance experience
  • Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement

Work Environment

This job is frequently required to perform work outdoors year-round with exposures to weather conditions prevalent at the time. This role will routinely be exposed to vibration and loud background noise and will frequently be exposed to work near moving mechanical parts. Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; work in high, precarious places; risk of electric shock; and extreme heat (non-weather), Occasional non-regular work hours, which may include nights and weekends.
