Overview

D498, COLUMBIA Weapons & Mechanical Systems, is responsible for the COLUMBIA Class HM&E (Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical) design products. D498 engineers work as a team with D453 Mechanical Design to complete COLUMBIA Class Rev A design disclosures and COLUMBIA Class Design Changes. D498 engineers also work with vendors and shipyard personnel through the review and disposition of VIRs (Vendor Information Requests) and CNs (change notices), providing technical oversight throughout the build of products on our design disclosures, and resolving technical problems while also performing calculations to support these products.

This is an Extended Work Assignment (EWA) position based in Syracuse, NY, with an initial period of time working in the office in New London. D498 is seeking an engineer to represent Electric Boat on-site at the Lockheed Martin plant in Syracuse, NY. Lockheed Martin (LM) is Electric Boat’s supplier that is designing and building the components of the Columbia Thin Line Towed Array Handling System (TLTAHS). This system has experienced significant technical challenges recently which have necessitated component re-design and delayed delivery of the components. Full-time Electric Boat on-site presence is required at LM’s facility in Syracuse, NY to provide technical and project management oversight of LM’s work on the TLTAHS. This EWA is expected to last up to one year, with a potential conversion to a permanent relocation depending on supplier performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing intrusive oversight of Lockheed Martin (LM)
  • Facilitating coordination/communication between the LM team and the EB team
  • Witnessing testing and critical inspections
  • Identifying shortcomings in LM processes and engaging with the appropriate organizations to aid in improving those processes
  • Performing surveillances of any and all manufacturing and testing evolutions
  • Working with LM program management team to gain a clear understanding of program plans and ensuring the plans are executable
  • Challenging LM on schedule execution

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Marine engineering
  • 1-5 years of post-graduate engineering experience

Preferred:

  • Experience with vendor oversight is desired
  • Project management experience is desired
