About This Position
The position is responsible for assisting instructors and students in HVAC/R labs. This position will include mentoring and coaching students in support of the curriculum presented and practiced in the classroom and lab.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
Primary Responsibilities
Under the direction of the program coordinator, and in support of faculty members, the HVAC/R Lab Assistant will:
- Maintain tool rooms, material storage, demonstration equipment, and training models in good working order. This includes using hand tools, minor troubleshooting and repair of equipment, and cleaning and organizing storage racks, shelves, and cabinets
- Assist in the daily operations and support of the HVAC/R Program, including preparing and maintaining lab spaces and equipment
- Preparation of materials and machinery for lab exercises
- Maintain inventory of consumable materials and submit requests for supplies
- Assist faculty in the classrooms and labs as needed to monitor students for safety and assist students in conducting lab exercises
- Maintain a clean and safe work area
- Inspect equipment and notify the Program Coordinator of problems
- Perform basic maintenance on laboratory equipment
- Hold regular and ad-hoc tutorials for students that reinforce best practices and techniques involved in the methodologies for recovery, evacuation, purging, torquing to spec, systematic troubleshooting, leak detection, and others as needed
- Communicate effectively in a professional, tactful, and courteous manner with students, employees, faculty, and the general public
- Carry out any other tasks as directed by the department to ensure the smooth operation of the program
COMPETENCIES
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Fundamental knowledge and skills in tool applications and safe use
- EPA 608 Certification required
- Basic brazing, soldering, and pipe fitting skills
- Solid foundation in vapor compression cycle, Ohm’s Law, low and line voltage controls
- Strong understanding of best practices and specific hands-on skills applied in the field with a variety of tools and equipment deployed at TJC
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No direct supervision
Work Environment: Regular work required outside of normal business hours
Physical Demands: This position includes light lifting and the ability to stand, sit, walk, reach, stoop, bend, push, pull, kneel, climb, use hands and fingers, and talk/hear for extended periods. Must possess mobility to work in a standard shop setting, as well as an outside environment, that could include extreme hot and cold temperatures, and use standard office equipment, including a computer.
Travel Required: Yes - Minimal
If travel is required, the candidate must have and maintain a current, valid Texas driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education
Associate’s Degree in Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration –OR– High School diploma or GED with industry certification required
Required Experience
At least 1000 contact hours in a formal HVAC program or one year of HVAC/R work experience
Required Credentials/Licensures
EPA 608 Certification
Additional Job-Specific Requirements
