JOB SUMMARY:

Kentucky State University seeks qualified candidates for the position of Adjunct Instructor of Applied Instrument – Woodwinds. The instructor will provide specialized applied instruction in one or more woodwind instruments (Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, and/or Double Reeds) to students enrolled in the Music program. The position contributes directly to the University’s mission by preparing students for successful musical performance, scholarship, and continued study.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide individualized weekly lessons in woodwind instruments, emphasizing technical and musical development appropriate for college-level study.
  • Prepare students for juries, recitals, auditions, and ensemble performances through guided repertoire selection and applied instruction.
  • Develop lesson plans, course materials, and assessment methods in alignment with departmental standards and NASM accreditation guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and grade records in accordance with University policy.
  • Participate in departmental juries and evaluations to assess student proficiency and progress.
  • Foster an inclusive learning environment that supports students from diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Communicate regularly with the Chair and Coordinator regarding student performance, scheduling, and instructional needs.
  • Redundant phrasing of “essential in providing specialized instruction.”

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated excellence in woodwind performance and pedagogy.
  • Strong commitment to undergraduate music education and student development.
  • Ability to apply effective instructional techniques to engage and motivate students.
  • Familiarity with digital tools and learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard) to support instruction.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • This position does not have supervisory responsibility.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Performs other related duties as assigned in support of the academic program and institutional mission.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To qualify as an adjunct instructor at Kentucky State University, the individual must meet:

  • A Master’s degree in the teaching discipline, or
  • A Master’s degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field.
  • Record of successful applied teaching at the college or secondary level preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed primarily on campus in instructional studios and performance spaces.
  • Requires availability for weekly lessons, student juries, and departmental events as assigned.
  • This is a temporary, part-time exempt position; no benefits are associated with adjunct appointments.
