The Hepatology Section is seeking a highly skilled Medical Data Scientist with at least a Master’s/MPH and demonstrated experience analyzing large, complex clinical datasets, including transplant, liver disease, and longitudinal outcomes data. This position plays a central role in building a robust, data-driven research program within our academic hepatology group.
The Medical Data Scientist will collaborate closely with hepatologists, hepatology trainees, and transplant and collaborators across the spectrum of Total Liver Care at UPMC to support study design, statistical planning, data management, and advanced analytics. This position offers the opportunity to work remotely while also contributing to impactful clinical, epidemiologic, and translational research that advances care for patients
with chronic liver disease and liver transplant recipients
Job Summary
Oversees analytical teams in the extraction, aggregation, and quality assurance of data from multiple clinical data depositories in support of clinical research and departmental projects. Collaborates across business units, coordinates all aspects of research data collection and project oversight, and manages design and implementation of project analysis plan. Prepares documents for peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and sections of grant applications.
Essential Functions
• Provide statistical expertise for study design, including power calculations, sampling strategies, and methodological consultation.
• Manage, clean, and analyze large clinical datasets (e.g., high-dimensional EMR-derived data, registry data, national and institutional and multicenter hepatology and transplant databases, prospective and retrospective cohort data, etc).
• Develop and execute statistical analysis plans for manuscripts, abstracts, grant proposals, and assist with hepatology quality
improvement initiatives.
• Apply advanced statistical methods (e.g., regression modeling, survival analysis, competing risks, longitudinal and repeated-
measures models, causal inference, propensity-based methods, etc). Although experience with machine learning and generative AI is desirable, it is
not required.
• Conduct analyses of hepatology and transplant-related datasets, including, but not limited to: donor-recipient matching, waitlist outcomes, post-transplant outcomes, and longitudinal graft and patient survival. Perform advanced modeling for, but not limited to, cirrhosis
progression, hepatocellular carcinoma risk, acute-on-chronic liver failure, and other disease trajectories.
• Support development of predictive tools and risk stratification models tailored to hepatology and organ transplant populations.
Physical Effort
- Work is performed primarily in a sedentary, officebased environment.
- Requires prolonged periods of sitting while using a computer, keyboard, and mouse.
- Involves frequent hand and finger manipulation for typing and data entry.
- Occasional standing, walking, or moving between workstations or meeting spaces.
- May require lifting or carrying light items such as laptops, documents, or reference materials (typically under 10 pounds).
- Requires visual focus for extended periods when reviewing data, code, or reports.
- Ability to maintain attention and posture during long analytical or computational tasks.
