About This Position
Position Summary
Boston Ship Repair is seeking skilled Outside Machinists to perform repair, maintenance, and overhaul work on a wide range of shipboard machinery. This role offers the opportunity to work on high-profile vessels in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, align, and repair pumps, motors, generators, propellers, shafting, bearings, compressors, and hydraulic units.
- Operate and maintain hydraulic equipment; troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems.
- Use torque wrenches (metric and standard) to achieve precise tolerances.
- Conduct dock and sea trials to verify machinery performance after repair.
- Perform alignments using dial indicators, micrometers, and other precision tools.
- Read and interpret blueprints, job specifications, and manuals.
- Set up and operate portable machine tools such as boring bars, drills, and grinders.
- Work on large ocean-going vessels in an active shipyard environment.
- Work safely in all environments, including confined spaces and at heights.
Qualifications
- 3–5 years of marine, industrial, or shipyard mechanic experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems and torque wrench applications.
- Skilled with hand tools, measuring instruments, and alignment equipment.
- Ability to work from technical drawings and follow detailed instructions.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs, work in confined spaces, and follow safety protocols.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Shipboard and shipyard conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, noise, and moving machinery.
- Requires standing, climbing, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 lbs daily.
