About This Position

The Chief Deputy Clerk serves as the Second-in-Command to the Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller (Clerk), with full managerial and supervisory authority for the Clerk’s Office. The position is responsible for supervision, planning, directing, overseeing the extensive operational and administrative functions of the Clerk’s office. The position works independently, reporting major activities through periodic meetings with the Clerk. This position operates in an office setting Monday through Friday; however occasional evenings and weekend hours are required for emergencies. Also, the position is classified as exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and reports directly to the Clerk of Court.


  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the Clerk of Courts Office.
  • Reviews invoices to ensure payment from appropriate budgeted funds.
  • Analyze potential financial effects of new legislation, case filings, and state policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate staff efforts, monitor and ensure timely compliance with internal and statewide deadlines, and evaluate and memorialize lessons learned during major projects and security and/or emergency operations.
  • Perform regular reviews of the progress of work within the division and develop divisional objectives and timetables.
  • Participates in the development and management of annual budgets.
  • Directs the development and maintenance of a variety of regular and special reports.
  • Directs the maintenance of office records.
  • Develops, reviews, implements, and enforces policies and procedures.
  • Oversees the operations of the Courts, Records Management, Audit Services, Finance, Information Technology, Minutes and Record, Traffic Division and Recording divisions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned including problem solving and continuous process improvement.
  • Ensures the accuracy of information disseminated by the office and serving as the representative of the Court to the media, courts, agencies, lawyers, and the public.
  • Respond to complaints, difficult situations and non-routine inquiries from the public in a professional manner.
  • Assist the Clerk of Circuit Court in monitoring all department budgets; monitor expenditures and ensure compliance with budget limitations.
  • Attends County Board and other committee meetings as required by the Clerk of Circuit Court which may occasionally involve evening commitments. monitors budgeted expenses, including analysis of costs.
  • In absence of Clerk of Circuit Court, assumes responsibility for the office.
  • Performs related work as assigned or required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret state statutes.
  • A working knowledge of federal regulations, state and local rules, and county ordinances pertaining to the administration of court records.
  • Ability to train, direct and monitor the work of others, including program level supervisors.
  • Knowledge of the terms and procedures used by the courts.
  • Ability to work independently and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other governmental agencies, officials, news media and the public.
  • Ability to develop and implement office policies and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze office operations and make recommendations on improving efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ability to interpret computer generated records and to work with others on the modification and/or implementation of automated record systems.

Bachelor's degree from a college or university of recognized standing in Business or Public Administration, Court Administration, Organizational Development, or a related field. A Master of Business or Public Administration is preferred and may be considered as qualifying for three years of the required specialized experience.

Candidates must have a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible administrative, professional, or legal work experience in public service or business that provided a thorough knowledge of the concepts, principles, policies, and theories of management and administrative processes. At least five of the ten years of experience must be specialized experience in supervisory, managerial, or professional work that demonstrates proven skills in managing limited resources, excellent analytical skills, mature judgment, solid organizational management and problem-solving experience, strong employee-relation and interpersonal skills, and superior oral and written communication skills.


  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
  • Complete Background Check of Florida Crime Information Center (FCIC)/ National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
