Job Description
Position Description: WE ARE LOOKING FOR A PART-TIME LIVING HISTORIAN AT THE ALAMO!
$20 an hour after training.
POSITION SCOPE Living Historians provide a uniquely immersive, educational experience at the Alamo, interacting with visitors while wearing clothing and equipment representing the over 300 years of history and using third-person interpretationmeaning they are themselves but depict the highlighted historical eras via period-appropriate dress and activities. Living Historians provide information and detailed programs to groups of various ages. They also assist in the planning and execution of special events. Lastly, Alamo Living Historians also assist in the creation and implementation of new programming, inventory maintenance, tours, and other duties as required.
DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Proactively engage with the public by greeting, welcoming and sharing the history with visitors. Pursue ongoing education to learn the broader historical narrative to present to visitors, students, and tour groups. Assist in the development and execution of special events. Research and develop new Living History programming. Provide engaging interpretation through demonstrations, activities and interactive programs for visitors of various ages, centered on life in Early Texas. Help direct visitor experience and promote the Alamos services. Participate and uphold required training to become certified in black-powder weapons use and participate in daily Musket Firing Demonstrations. Dress appropriately in period clothing (19th century) on a daily basis, and in diverse weather conditions. Follow all site safety procedures. Responding to visitor questions about the Alamo and life in 18th and 19th century Texas.
QUALIFICATIONS
Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Experience in public speaking/customer service/theatre/history interpretation preferred. Ability to work in a fast paced, creative environment Ability to work independently and within a team environment. Ability to exercise integrity, good judgment, critical problem solving, patience and take initiative, especially when interacting with the public. Must be available to work on weekends. College coursework in history preferred. Strong background in research preferred. Experience with black powder weaponry a plus. Proficiency in English required, with additional languages an asset (Spanish preferred). Basic knowledge of Texas history and geography. Experience with or knowledge of textiles, hand sewing, baking, banjo, guitar, drum, fife, mandolin, fiddle or other period crafts and activities desirable. Ability to function effectively in an ever-changing environment, stand outdoors in heat/inclement weather for extended periods of time, and deal with frequent interruptions. Ability to present to diverse groups and maintain control in difficult situations. Ability to lift, move and carry up to 40lbs. Ability to prepare and present 15-to-20-minute programs within the parameters set forth by the Alamos Living History & Learning Programs Department.
