Psychiatrist – Medical Director

Chesapeake, VA | Full-Time | $260,000+ per year (based on experience)

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM (occasional after-hours support may be required)

About the Role
We’re seeking an experienced Psychiatrist / Medical Director to lead our outpatient behavioral healthcare team. In this key leadership role, you’ll oversee clinical and administrative operations while providing direct psychiatric care to clients. This Psychiatrist position blends psychiatric leadership with hands-on clinical work—including evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, psychotherapy, and medication management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee all medical and psychiatric treatment programs including Psychiatric Services Clinic, Telepsychiatry, ACT, OBOT, and 24-hour residential programs.
  • Supervise and mentor medical staff, including nurses, physicians, and consultants.
  • Collaborate with CIBH leadership to manage psychiatric services, budgets, and quality standards.
  • Develop and review program goals, procedures, and policies to ensure top-tier psychiatric care.
  • Participate in strategic planning and contribute to clinical best practices across programs.
  • Provide psychiatric evaluations, prescribe and monitor medications, and manage treatment plans.
  • Support innovation, training, and data-driven improvements in psychiatry and behavioral health services.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:
  • Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.
  • Completion of a 4-year accredited residency program in Psychiatry.
  • Minimum of several years’ experience in psychiatric care, preferably in community-based behavioral health settings.

Licenses & Certifications:
  • Current Virginia medical license and DEA registration.
  • Board Certification in Psychiatry (preferred).
  • Waiver to prescribe Suboxone (within 12 months of hire).
  • Valid driver’s license meeting City of Chesapeake standards.

Required Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited medical school and satisfactory completion of a 4-year accredited residency program in psychiatry.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Possession of current valid Virginia Board of Health Professions license and DEA Registration.
  • Board Certification in Psychiatry is preferred.
  • Waiver to prescribe Suboxone must be obtained with 12 months of hire.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in community-based mental health and substance abuse care is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent oral communications skill as the work involves the careful and precise use of language as the incumbent interfaces with a wide variety of staff and customers of the agency.
  • Excellent written communication skills, as the duties involve the continuous preparation of clinical records, insurance, and other reimbursement forms, evaluation, and related reports for local, state, and federal health and human service, law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, and correspondence to clients, client’s families, and/or other institutions.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of electronic medical records to assist in developing efficient and effective documentation of psychiatric/medical services.
  • Extensive, updated knowledge and skills in the area of psychiatric care/treatment, management of medication, appropriate medical and psychiatric follow-up, good communication, and good staff relational skills.
  • The ability to supervise based on reasonable judgment and prudent care.
