Summary
SENS is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer with a strong product compliance focus to join our engineering team and help develop the next generation of industrial power products. This role is broader than a traditional compliance-only position: the engineer will translate customer, regulatory, and internal needs into clear system requirements, architectures, verification plans, and compliant product designs.
The Senior Systems Engineer will contribute across the full product lifecycle, from concept investigation and feasibility assessment through design, integration, certification, production launch, and ongoing product support. The role works at the center of electrical, mechanical, firmware/software, sales, manufacturing, product management, and external certification partners to ensure SENS products are reliable, manufacturable, certifiable, and clear in their technical intent.
SENS products include industrial power systems, battery chargers and inverters, engine starting systems, and DC back-up power systems across a wide power range from 150W to 100kW.
Responsibilities
- Translate high-level product needs into system-level specifications, design requirements, interface requirements, and verification criteria that guide engineering decisions.
- Develop and maintain validation and compliance test matrices for assigned products and platforms.
- Identify technical, compliance, and programmatic risks early in the design process; assess tradeoffs and help develop mitigation plans that reduce risk to schedule, cost, quality, and certification.
- Interpret and apply complex safety, EMC, performance, and environmental standards and codes to SENS product designs.
- Provide actionable compliance design requirements such as pollution degree, creepage and clearance, hipot voltages, thermal limits, circuit protection, wiring, terminations, and enclosure requirements.
- Coordinate product compliance submittals, testing, follow-up service reports, and maintenance with certification agencies such as UL, seismic certification bodies, ABS, and others.
- Perform compliance assessments, testing, and documentation for self-declarations and customer requirements, including CE marking, NFPA 110, RoHS, REACH, Conflict Minerals, and related obligations.
- Define and maintain traceability between requirements, design elements, compliance obligations, and verification activities.
- Support system architecture definition across hardware, software, interfaces, wiring, data flows, and product-level dependencies.
- Coordinate integration activities across electrical, mechanical, firmware/software, manufacturing, and documentation teams to ensure subsystems work together as intended.
- Plan and support system-level testing to confirm that products meet functional, reliability, regulatory, and customer requirements.
- Facilitate peer-to-peer and cross-functional design reviews to ensure designs satisfy system requirements and regulatory expectations.
- Generate and maintain customer-facing technical specifications, specification tables, and specifying engineer documentation as needed.
- Maintain compliance test equipment, calibrations, procedures, and working knowledge of standards changes that apply to SENS products.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, systems engineering, or a closely related technical field.
- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience in systems engineering, product engineering, regulatory compliance, or certification for hardware-based products.
- Strong understanding of AC/DC power circuits, circuit protection, system wiring and terminations, power supplies, batteries, and industrial power products.
- Experience translating customer, regulatory, and product needs into clear requirements, specifications, design inputs, and verification plans.
- Working knowledge of safety, EMC, performance, and environmental standards that apply to industrial electrical equipment and power conversion products.
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) as it relates to equipment design.
- Experience interpreting standards and converting them into practical design, documentation, and test requirements.
- Strong troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, systems-level thinking, problem solving, time management, and critical thinking skills.
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple priorities under time pressure while maintaining attention to technical detail.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively across engineering, sales, manufacturing, product management, customers, and certification agencies.
- Customer-focused and reliability-focused mindset with a strong commitment to product quality and engineering process discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with industrial battery chargers, DC power systems, inverters, engine starting systems, energy storage systems, or related power conversion products.
- Product certification experience with UL, seismic, ABS, CE marking, or similar certification and compliance programs.
- Experience with standards such as UL 1012, UL 1236, UL 508A, UL 1973, and UL 1745.
- Experience developing requirements traceability, system architecture documentation, validation matrices, or specifying engineer documentation.
- Experience supporting products from concept and feasibility through certification, production launch, and field support.
