DESCRIPTION

Position Summary:

The Government Affairs Associate contributes to America's Essential Hospitals' advocacy efforts by successfully supporting key legislative, policy, and communications activities as well as tracking and summarizing legislative developments. The Government Affairs Associate also conducts email campaigns, including weekly and monthly member newsletters and ad-hoc member communications, in addition to supporting digital and other communications activities. The Government Affairs Associate serves a key role as a coordinator and member liaison for legislative meetings and events; coordinating workflow between the three teams. The ideal candidate has strong research and writing skills, familiarity with the legislative process, and the ability to synthesize complex policy information into clear, actionable insights for internal stakeholders. This is a great opportunity for an individual interested in public policy seeking hands-on experience working at the intersection of government, industry, and strategy.

The Government Affairs Associate enjoys a hybrid schedule, coming to the office on Tuesdays and as needed for internal and external meetings, events, or projects. The projected salary range for the Government Affairs Associate is $60,000-$65,000 per year.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS ASSOCIATE*:

Legislative Advocacy Support

  • Monitor relevant legislation, association endorsements, and sign-on letters.
  • Support member engagement activities, including regional advocacy trainings, hospital site visits, lobby days, capitol hill briefings, and webinars.
  • Monitor, maintain, and manage the Legislative Affairs content on AEH webpage.
  • Compile dossiers on congressional delegations for hospital member site-visits.
  • Draft summaries of legislation and legislative news articles, as assigned.
  • Assist with various political and grassroots activities as assigned.
  • Manage and update legislative affairs SharePoint webpage content.
  • Coordinate legislative affairs' work on AEH podcasts.

Policy Development Support

  • Monitor various federal regulatory and state-level policy developments, to include:
    • Following Federal Register and Office of Management and Budget's Regulatory Review Dashboard.
    • Tracking policy topics through agency communications, trade press, and stakeholder publications.
    • Providing summaries of regulations or policy developments, as assigned.
  • Draft nomination letters for hospital member participation in policy task forces, commissions, technical expert panels, etc. Serve as project coordinator for Policy Committee, including:
    • Coordinating project plans and communications.
    • Developing preparatory materials for committee calls and meetings.
    • Attending committee events.
    • Drafting meeting minutes.

Project Management, General Team and Association Functions

  • Provide support for Federal Advocacy Assembly and Government Relations Academy events.
    • Coordinate agendas, speakers, and production of program materials.
    • Track and communicate key project developments and deadlines internally and with external consultants.
  • Coordinate logistics for hospital in-town lobbyists meeting.
  • Actively participates in team meetings and activities, provides support and backup for team members as needed.
  • Other projects and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE FOR THE GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS ASSOCIATE:

  • Bachelor's degree in political science, public health, communications, public relations, or a related field.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and SharePoint).
  • Project management experience, project management software (Asana) experience a plus.
  • Basic understanding of federal advocacy, membership associations, and US health care policy.
