The Senior Software Engineer, Back-End Focus will play a critical role in building and scaling technology solutions that power a modern insurance platform. The Senior Software Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable software solutions while contributing to technical strategy, team growth, and product delivery. This role requires strong ownership, collaboration, and the ability to balance short-term execution with long-term engineering improvements.
- Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services using Ruby, with occasional contributions in Python and TypeScript.
- Develop and enhance front-end functionality using modern JavaScript frameworks and TypeScript.
- Lead and contribute to architectural discussions and technical decisions that improve system scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
- Deliver complex features from concept through production while maintaining strong quality and testing standards.
- Participate actively in Agile/Scrum processes, including standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
- Collaborate with Product, QA, project teams, and engineering stakeholders to align technical solutions with business objectives.
- Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and technical guidance.
- Advocate for strategic technical investments and clearly communicate trade-offs to stakeholders.
- Improve engineering workflows, tooling, and development practices to increase team effectiveness.
- Take ownership of meaningful projects and contribute to improving customer and internal experiences.
The ideal candidate is an experienced software engineer with a strong backend foundation, proven ability to deliver complex production systems, and a passion for building scalable technology. They should be comfortable working independently, collaborating across teams, and mentoring other engineers in a dynamic environment.
- Demonstrated experience delivering large, complex software projects in production environments.
- Strong proficiency in Ruby and experience working with Python and/or TypeScript.
- Experience working with PostgreSQL or other relational database systems.
- Experience contributing to architecture design, technical decisions, and long-term system improvements.
- Ability to evaluate technical investments and communicate their benefits and trade-offs effectively.
- Experience mentoring engineers through code reviews, collaboration, or informal leadership.
- Familiarity with modern JavaScript frameworks such as React, Vue, or Angular.
- Experience working within Agile/Scrum development environments.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to operate independently with limited technical guidance.
- Excellent communication skills and experience collaborating with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities.
- Preferred location in Central or Eastern US time zones (CDT or EDT).
