Outboard Engine Technician in Richfield, Wisconsin at Flamingo Marine Inc

ABOUT US:

We’re currently seeking an experienced Outbound Engine Technician to help us build and scale a high-performing manufacturing operation from the ground up.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Outboard Engine Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, rigging, and testing outboard marine engines and related boat systems. This position ensures all vessels meet manufacturer specifications, company quality standards, and customer expectations before delivery. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical aptitude, experience with marine propulsion systems, and a
commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, fuel, cooling, and hydraulic issues on outboard engines.
- Perform routine maintenance including oil changes, lower unit service, water pump
replacement, tune-ups, and scheduled preventative maintenance.
- Install, rig, and commission new outboard engines according to manufacturer specifications.
Perform engine break-in procedures, system calibration, and software updates using
manufacturer diagnostic tools.
- Troubleshoot electrical systems including batteries, charging systems, ignition components,
gauges, digital controls, and wiring harnesses.
- Inspect and repair steering, throttle, shift, trim, and tilt systems.
- Conduct pre-delivery inspections (PDI) and quality checks to ensure vessels are ready for customer delivery.
- Perform sea trials and operational testing to verify engine performance and resolve issues.
- Complete warranty repairs and document findings in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
- Maintain accurate service records, repair documentation, and work orders.
- Communicate repair recommendations and estimated completion timelines with supervisors or service advisors.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Follow OSHA regulations, environmental guidelines, and company safety procedures.
- Assist with winterization, de-winterization, storage preparation, and seasonal maintenance.
- Support production, quality, and service departments as needed.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to improve efficiency, quality, and customer satisfaction.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical degree or certification in Marine Technology, Small Engine Repair, Automotive Technology, or related field preferred.
- 2+ years of marine engine repair experience preferred.
- Experience with Mercury Marine, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Evinrude, or similar outboard manufacturers preferred.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams, service manuals, and technical documentation.
- Experience using computerized diagnostic software and scan tools.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Valid driver's license preferred.

Strong experience in:

- Strong understanding of two-stroke and four-stroke outboard engine operation.
- Knowledge of marine electrical, fuel, hydraulic, and cooling systems.
- Familiarity with NMEA networks, digital controls, and marine electronics is a plus.
- Ability to safely operate shop equipment, lifts, hoists, and diagnostic equipment.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced manufacturing or service environment.
- Commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement.
