Drainage Engineer II - Road/Highway

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Drainage Engineer II - Road/Highway based in the United States.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to major transportation infrastructure projects that improve mobility, safety, and community connectivity across the country.
The Drainage Engineer II will support the design and delivery of roadway and highway drainage solutions, combining technical expertise with innovative engineering practices.
The position involves working on diverse projects in a collaborative remote environment alongside experienced engineers, designers, and transportation professionals.
The successful candidate will apply hydraulic and hydrologic modeling expertise to develop efficient, sustainable, and compliant drainage systems.
This role provides the opportunity to influence critical infrastructure projects while developing technical leadership skills.

Accountabilities:

The Drainage Engineer II will perform drainage and hydraulic engineering activities for transportation projects, supporting design development, technical documentation, and project execution while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

  • Perform and lead drainage and culvert design activities for roadway and highway projects across the United States.
  • Develop drainage and irrigation designs, including hydraulic and hydrologic modeling, calculations, and technical analyses.
  • Prepare and review construction details, erosion and sediment control plans, quantity calculations, cost estimates, and technical reports.
  • Create engineering deliverables including design calculations, drawings, CAD models, specifications, procurement documents, and installation packages.
  • Support proposal evaluations, technical memoranda, and project documentation activities.
  • Define and manage scopes of work, budgets, schedules, and task planning while communicating project progress to management.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to CAD designers, junior engineers, and other project team members.
  • Serve as a technical discipline lead on small to mid-size projects when required.
  • Support broader civil and transportation engineering activities as needed.
  • Assist with project coordination, quality reviews, and the successful delivery of transportation infrastructure solutions.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in civil engineering and roadway drainage design, with experience applying technical expertise to transportation infrastructure projects.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required.
  • 3+ years of experience in roadway and highway drainage design.
  • Proficiency with CAD and engineering design software.
  • Experience with MicroStation or AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Experience using hydraulic and hydrologic modeling tools such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, HY-8, Bentley InRoads Storm & Sanitary, Bentley StormCAD, WMS, NRCS WinTR-55, Bentley FlowMaster, FHWA Hydraulic Toolbox, or EPA SWMM.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience supporting state DOT transportation projects is highly preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in any U.S. state is strongly preferred.
  • Experience designing highway and roadway drainage systems, including storm sewers, channels, culverts, detention/retention systems, and related infrastructure is a plus.
  • Experience with land development drainage design and stormwater permitting is preferred.
