Job Summary:

The Field Specialist is responsible for performing technical field work to support the safe and reliable operation of the company's natural gas transmission and distribution systems. This role specializes in activities related to cathodic protection, gas measurement, pressure control, automation, SCADA systems, and instrumentation. The Field Specialist ensures that pipeline assets operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Cathodic Protection & Corrosion Control

• Install, maintain, test, and troubleshoot cathodic protection (CP) systems for pipelines, stations, and facilities.

• Perform pipe-to-soil potential readings, rectifier inspections, current measurements, and interference surveys.

• Conduct annual and periodic CP surveys as required (CIS, DCVG, ACVG) to ensure compliance with regulatory and company standards.

• Document CP readings, analyze data trends, and recommend corrective actions for corrosion-related issues.

Gas Measurement & Instrumentation

• Install, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot gas measurement equipment including meters, regulators, transmitters, pressure recorders, and analyzers.

• Ensure accurate and reliable gas volume and quality measurements to support custody transfer, billing, and operational control.

• Perform flow calculations, meter proving, and verification tests according to industry standards (AGA, API).

SCADA, Automation & Remote Monitoring

• Perform installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of SCADA and automation equipment including RTUs, PLCs, transmitters, sensors, and telemetry systems.

• Assist with configuration and programming of remote monitoring devices and communication systems (radio, cellular, satellite).

• Work with SCADA operations and control room personnel to ensure reliable data transmission and real-time system visibility.

Compliance & Documentation

• Maintain accurate records of field activities, calibrations, inspections, and test results to ensure regulatory and internal compliance.

• Support audits, inspections, and agency inquiries by providing documentation and field data as required.

• Follow all safety, environmental, and regulatory procedures during field work.

Field Support & Emergency Response

• Provide technical field support for construction, maintenance, and integrity projects.

• Assist in emergency response efforts, pressure control operations, and pipeline shutdowns or restorations as needed.

• Participate in on-call rotation and respond to after-hours emergencies or SCADA alerts.

Continuous Improvement

• Recommend improvements to field procedures, testing protocols, and preventive maintenance activities.

• Stay current with emerging technologies, equipment advancements, and regulatory changes related to field operations.

Required Qualifications

• Associate's degree or technical certification in Instrumentation, Electronics, Corrosion, Industrial Technology, or related field (or equivalent work experience in natural gas operations).

• 3+ years of experience in gas pipeline operations, cathodic protection, SCADA, or gas measurement.

• Working knowledge or ability to obtain knowledge of cathodic protection systems, corrosion control principles, and NACE standards.

• Strong understanding or ability to obtain understanding of gas measurement technologies, pressure control, and instrumentation.

• Familiarity with SCADA systems, RTUs, PLCs, telemetry, and communications protocols.

• Ability to interpret piping schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications.

• Proficient with data collection devices, test equipment, and basic computer applications.

• Strong problem-solving skills, mechanical aptitude, and attention to detail.

• Excellent safety awareness and commitment to following established safety protocols.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in utility or midstream pipeline field operations.

• NACE CP certification or equivalent.

Physical Requirements:

• Field-based position with extensive outdoor work in all weather conditions.

• Regular travel throughout assigned area.

• On-call availability for emergency response and after-hours work.

• Physical requirements include lifting, climbing, bending, and working in confined spaces.
