Barnard's Vagelos Computational Science Center (CSC) is seeking a motivated Graduate Assistant to support the educational programming operations of the center to enhance the center’s mission. The CSC is committed to improving computational skills and digital literacy across disciplines and aims to lower barriers to entry into computing for the Barnard community and beyond. We have many programs to support this, including our open workshop series, yearly involvement in NYC Open Data Week, Computing Fellows program, grant competitions, public interest technology initiatives and more.

This role requires a candidate who thrives working independently and has strong organizational, research, and communication skills. A solid background in computing and pedagogy is required.

The Graduate Assistant will play a key role in the continued development of CSC educational initiatives, working closely with the Senior Associate Director to ideate, organize, and help execute open workshop programming, specialized initiatives, talks and symposia. They will think outside the box to make computational learning accessible and exciting, and focus on creating engaging learning experiences for the Barnard community.

The graduate assistant should have an intermediate-to-advanced knowledge of at least one coding language, experience teaching with code, an interest in pedagogy, and most importantly, a strong willingness to learn.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Ideating, organizing and executing on educational programming for the Center, including talks, workshops, hackathons, roundtable discussions and more

  • Monitoring program activities, including collecting data, analyzing outcomes, and contributing to documentation and reporting

  • Thinking creatively and critically around topics in computational science

  • Collaborating with CSC Staff as a team player

  • Creating, promoting, and disseminating information related to events, workshops, and resources within the Barnard/Columbia community

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

Knowledge, skills:

  • Strong understanding of computing and technology, combined with a solid foundation in pedagogical theories and practices

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration

  • Experience in academic settings, particularly in teaching or coordinating educational initiatives

  • Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and coordinate diverse stakeholders

  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of at least one coding language

  • Ability to collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data related to CSC events and programs

  • Creative and driven to achieve results

Desired:

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Canva, with experience in design and content creation

Position Requirements:

  • In-person presence for meetings and events as needed

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Knowledge of and willingness to use Google Drive platforms

  • Experience in computer science, STEM, or a related field

To Qualify:

Must be currently enrolled in a graduate-level program in education, computer science, or a related field.

Compensation: $33/hr.; 8-10 hours a week on average

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
