Payroll Subject Matter Expert

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Payroll Subject Matter Expert based in India.

We are seeking an experienced payroll professional to provide subject matter expertise across complex payroll operations and transformation initiatives. This role will help ensure accurate, efficient, compliant, and secure payroll processes for a global workforce. You will contribute to payroll projects, process improvements, data management, and technology-enabled solutions. The position involves close collaboration with HR, finance, external providers, and other strategic stakeholders. You will also help strengthen employee-facing payroll services while maintaining high standards for data integrity and information security. This is an opportunity to influence payroll operations within a large, complex, and internationally focused environment.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead and contribute to payroll projects focused on implementing core practices, improving operational efficiency, and strengthening service delivery.
  • Apply analytical thinking and structured problem-solving to identify and resolve complex payroll discrepancies, risks, and process inefficiencies.
  • Collaborate closely with HR, finance, payroll teams, external providers, and other stakeholders to deliver effective payroll solutions.
  • Translate complex payroll concepts, processes, and requirements into clear and accessible communications for internal and external audiences.
  • Identify opportunities for creativity and innovation, developing new payroll solutions and continuously improving existing processes.
  • Contribute to customer service design initiatives aimed at improving the payroll experience for employees.
  • Establish and maintain strong data management practices across payroll-related information and processes.
  • Perform and oversee ETL activities, ensuring payroll data is accurately extracted, transformed, validated, and maintained.
  • Maintain awareness of payroll regulations, practices, and operational requirements across multiple regions.
  • Ensure sensitive payroll information is handled in accordance with information security policies, controls, and best practices.
  • Proactively support change initiatives involving payroll systems, processes, technologies, and operating models.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with strategic payroll service providers and other external partners.
  • Apply strong organizational knowledge to ensure payroll activities align with relevant policies, structures, and business requirements.
  • Lead and support project and programme management activities within the payroll function, ensuring effective planning, execution, and stakeholder coordination.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification, with 8–10 years of professional payroll experience and demonstrated expertise as an India Payroll Subject Matter Expert.
  • Strong understanding and practical experience applying core payroll practices within complex organizational environments.
  • Excellent analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate complex payroll issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with HR, finance, technology teams, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical or complex payroll topics clearly.
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in payroll process optimization, transformation, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience applying customer service design principles to improve employee-facing payroll experiences.
  • Strong data management capabilities, including practical experience with ETL processes and payroll data integrity.
  • Understanding of global payroll operations, regulatory environments, and regional differences in payroll practices.
  • Knowledge of information security principles and their application to sensitive payroll and employee data.
  • Experience managing organizational change, particularly within complex payroll, HR, or enterprise environments.
  • Ability to establish and manage effective strategic partnerships with payroll service providers.
  • Strong organizational awareness and the ability to navigate complex structures, policies, and stakeholder environments.
  • Experience with project and programme management, including planning, coordination, delivery, and stakeholder reporting.
  • A proactive, service-oriented approach with strong attention to detail, accountability, and continuous improvement.
