POSITION SUMMARY:
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care to patients within the assigned surgical oncology specialty as a member of a physician-led healthcare team. The APP supports continuity across the surgical episode of care by performing preoperative evaluations and optimization, reviewing diagnostic and clinical findings, coordinating surgical preparation, and assisting in the operating room as assigned and credentialed. Providing first- or second-assisting coverage, supporting procedural workflow and specimen communication, and completing applicable orders and documentation. Postoperatively, the APP participates in patient handoffs, rounds on hospitalized patients, monitors recovery, manages symptoms and complications in collaboration with the surgeon, coordinates discharge and follow-up, and provides outpatient postoperative care. All surgical duties are performed under the direction of the supervising or collaborating physician and in accordance with the APP’s scope of practice, collaborative practice agreement, clinical privileges, demonstrated competencies, and organizational policies. The APP also supports patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, care coordination, education, health promotion, quality improvement, and research initiatives.
Oncology APP is dedicated to assisting patients and their families as they cope with various forms of cancer. The Oncology APP is trained to manage the physical and psychological needs of the oncology patient and his or her family. They will provide primary, acute or tertiary care in a variety of medical settings including but not limited to private practice, hospitals, cancer care centers, and palliative care centers. They may also work collaboratively with educational programs on cancer prevention and similar topics.
CORE ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide assigned inpatient service coverage, including daily patient rounding, evaluation and management of hospitalized patients, coordination of care with the interdisciplinary team.
- Operating room coverage and perioperative support in collaboration with the supervising physician. Operating room responsibilities may include conducting preoperative patient evaluations, reviewing diagnostic results and confirming readiness for surgery, assisting with patient positioning and procedural preparation, serving as first or second assistant during surgical procedures as credentialed, supporting specimen handling and communication, placing orders and completing operative documentation, participating in postoperative handoffs, and coordinating immediate postoperative care, follow-up, and discharge planning within the APP’s scope of practice and granted privileges.
- Conduct comprehensive and episodic health history reviews and physical assessments of oncology patients with acute, chronic, and/or complex health conditions.
- Assist with specialty-specific procedures and treatments, as applicable to the assigned practice area.
- Establish medical diagnoses and treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising physician.
- Assess, monitor, and manage treatment-related symptoms, supportive care needs, and patient response to therapy.
- Write orders within the limits of the applicable collaborative practice agreement and scope of practice, including medications, supportive therapies, diagnostic imaging, laboratory testing, procedures, and other specialty-specific treatments.
- Coordinate and facilitate patient care across the continuum of oncology services.
- Provide clinical guidance and direction to nursing and clinical support staff regarding patient care issues.
- Communicate effectively with referring providers, primary care providers, specialists, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Provide assigned outpatient clinic coverage and manage an independent clinical practice within the APP’s scope of practice, granted privileges, and collaborative practice agreement. Outpatient responsibilities may include conducting new-patient consultations and established-patient follow-up visits; completing focused and comprehensive assessments; reviewing laboratory, imaging, pathology, and treatment results; developing and updating care plans in collaboration with the physician; managing symptoms, treatment-related toxicities, supportive care needs, and medication refills; performing pre-treatment clearance and post-procedure follow-up; triaging urgent patient concerns; placing appropriate orders and referrals; providing patient and family education; coordinating care with infusion, radiation oncology, surgery, navigation, pharmacy, palliative care, and other interdisciplinary services; maintaining timely clinical documentation; and providing coverage for collaborating physicians and other APPs as assigned.
- Maintain timely, accurate, and complete clinical documentation in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in specialty-specific quality improvement initiatives, clinical research activities, and performance improvement projects, as applicable.
- Educate patients and their families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, symptom management, preventive care, wellness, and survivorship.
- Participate in continuing education, professional development, and organizational learning opportunities.
- Participate in assigned call responsibilities, inpatient rounding, and cross-coverage as required by the practice, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and other scheduled coverage.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Nurse Practitioner: Master’s or Doctorate’s degree from accredited Nursing Program OR
- Physician Assistant: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from accredited PA Program.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION
APRN:
- Active RN and APRN license in State of Florida.
- Active board certification as a NP in: Adult; Adult/Gerontology, Acute Care; Family.
OR
PA:
- Active PA license in State of Florida.
- Active PA board certification.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES
- Oncology experience preferred
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Practice Management (PM) softwares, Microsoft Office Applications, and the ability to operate basic Internet software.
- Surgical Oncology experience preferred
- OR experience preferred
