The Manager, Pharmacy Distribution functions as both a clinician and manager dedicated to optimal processing, dispensing, and delivery services. This position will support direct supervision of pharmacy support staff personnel (e.g., Pharmacy Techs, interns, externs and students) to ensure safe, efficient, thoughtful, and deliberate medication distribution. The Manager, Pharmacy Distribution will directly oversee medication throughout its activity cycle, including but not limited to, medication delivery, medication storage, inventory, medication manipulation (such as compounding) and respective record keeping. This position reports directly to the Director of Pharmacy and drives excellent pharmacy distribution services.
I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Provides leadership and direction to the Pharmacy team/s; Manages the Pharmacy Technician staff resources, to ensure staffing plans (pharmacy technician team schedule) meets departmental and patient care needs. Responsible for performance evaluations; staff training and development; team building; recruitment; vacation/leave approvals; disciplinary matters and other related personnel management duties. Serves as back-up to Manager, Clinical Pharmacy as needed.
2. Works collaboratively with other health care providers and the clinical team members to develop and maintain a sound formulary system to support evidence based pharmaceutical care and cost-effective drug utilization. Coordinates formulary reviews, drug use evaluations, quality assurance programs.
3. Collaborates with the Pharmacy Leadership to develop and implement pharmacy programs and services in support of the pharmacy mission and strategic plan.
4. Ensures compliance with USP chapters, federal and state regulations, CMS and JC regulations, hospital and department policy and SOPs
5. Reviews workflow and performance indicators to identify opportunities for operational enhancements and skill building
II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited College/University of Pharmacy required
2. Valid Massachusetts Pharmacist License
3. Board Certification in one or more specialty required or must be obtained within 2 years of hire.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Five years of hospital pharmacy experience, with three years of direct oversight of sterile compounding activities
2. 2+ years of direct management experience including dealing with complex issues
3. Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and drive performance and process improvement initiatives
4. Excellent coaching and conflict resolution skills
5. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
6. Strong communication skills
7. Presentation skills and ability to present at all levels of the organization
8. Ability to work effectively in a team environment, and drive employee engagement and teamwork
9. Proven ability to take initiative and build strong and productive personal relationships
10. Must be proficient with computer use and technology, including systems specific to the pharmacy.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

- b) Evaluates and counsels staff on their performance.
- c) Prepares pharmacist work schedules, maintains an appropriate staffing level for clinical, operational, and Massachusetts ratio regulations
2. Works collaboratively with other health care providers and the clinical team members to develop and maintain a sound formulary system to support evidence based pharmaceutical care and cost-effective drug utilization. Coordinates formulary reviews, drug use evaluations, quality assurance programs.
- a) Established member and active participant of respective committees, including appropriate education to pharmacy staff and collaborative disciplines
- b) Participate in medication usage evaluation, research, and proactive considerations of formulary changes by executing primary literature and current standards practices
- c) Establish, enhance, participate, and execute quality assurance and compliance programs within the department and enterprise wide
3. Collaborates with the Pharmacy Leadership to develop and implement pharmacy programs and services in support of the pharmacy mission and strategic plan.
- a) Establish, enhance, participate, and execute operational processes that support optimal patient care and fiscal responsibility
- b) Participate in annual budget adherence and preparation
4. Ensures compliance with USP chapters, federal and state regulations, CMS and JC regulations, hospital and department policy and SOPs
- a) Maintain knowledge and competencies for USP chapter updates including, but not limited to USP 795, 797 and 800
- b) Maintain knowledge and identify opportunities to ensure operational execution and adherence to accreditation regulations
- c) Establish, enhance, participate, and execute operational process to support departmental, hospital, and other respective policies
- d) Establish, enhance, participate, and execute process to support adherence to appropriate medication waste practices
- e) Establish, enhance, participate, and execute processes to support excellent recording keeping of controlled substances
5. Reviews workflow and performance indicators to identify opportunities for operational enhancements and skill building
- a) Maintain knowledge and competencies of the software utilized to dispense medication throughout the hospital
- b) Maintain knowledge and competencies of the systems utilized to document compounding records, waste records, staff competencies, and interdepartmental education support
- c) Track and trend financial and operational efficiencies of process enhancements and opportunities
