Job Description

Senior Geotechnical Engineer

AGS, Inc.

San Francisco, CA | Full-time | Hybrid

About AGS

AGS, Inc. is a multi-disciplinary engineering firm and a City of San Francisco Local Business Enterprise (LBE), providing geotechnical, civil, structural, and environmental engineering services alongside construction and program management, and in-house laboratory testing. Founded in 1983 and headquartered in San Francisco, AGS has built a 40+ year track record serving public agencies and private clients throughout the Bay Area. Our team of 20+ professionals, most holding advanced degrees and professional licenses, is supported by a state-of-the-art in-house soil testing laboratory.

The Opportunity

We're hiring a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to lead geotechnical investigation, design, and construction observation on a range of Bay Area projects, including public infrastructure, waterfront/port facilities, site development, and slope stabilization work. You'll work closely with AGS's in-house civil, structural, and environmental teams — a key advantage of our multi-disciplinary model — and will have the opportunity to grow into project leadership and client-facing roles.

This is a high-growth-potential role: AGS's geotechnical practice is expanding its project pipeline, and we're looking for someone who can grow with the firm into senior leadership and principal-level opportunities as we scale.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning and executing subsurface investigation and laboratory testing programs, leveraging AGS's in-house lab
  • Performing geotechnical design and analysis for foundations, retaining walls, excavations, pavements, earthwork, and slope stabilization
  • Collaborating with AGS's civil and structural engineers on integrated project design
  • Evaluating field instrumentation data (settlement, ground movement, pile/anchor load tests) to calibrate predicted vs. actual performance
  • Leading geotechnical design and construction administration on public agency and waterfront/port projects
  • Preparing technical proposals, including scope, fee, and staffing plans, to support business development efforts
  • Supervising and mentoring junior engineering staff on project work and technical development
  • Managing project budgets and schedules to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery
  • Supporting business development and client relationships, particularly with existing public agency clients
  • Occasional travel for site visits within the Bay Area
  • Is This Role Right for You?
  • Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering preferred (Bachelor's with relevant experience considered)
  • PE required; GE in California preferred (or actively pursuing)
  • Minimum 6 years of geotechnical engineering practice, ideally including public infrastructure and/or waterfront/slope stability work
  • Demonstrated experience in project planning, analysis, design, construction observation, and deliverable preparation
  • Working knowledge of California seismic codes and analysis methods
  • Familiarity with Bay Area soil conditions and hazards (liquefaction, expansive/compressible soils)
  • Experience with geotechnical analysis software a plus, including FLAC 3D, LPile, AllPile, APile, PYWall, Shaft, CLIQ3, SLIDE2, and Settle3
  • What AGS Offers
  • Competitive, equitable pay commensurate with experience
  • A collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment with direct access to in-house civil, structural, environmental, and architecture teams
  • Direct exposure to public agency and marquee Bay Area infrastructure projects
  • In-house soil testing laboratory and strong technical support
  • High growth potential: a clear path to project leadership and principal-level opportunities
  • A stable, established local firm (40+ years) with room to grow into project leadership
