This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Legal Risk & Compliance – Financial Crimes Compliance Senior Consultant based in Canada.
As a Senior Consultant, you will help financial services organizations identify, assess, and manage complex financial crime compliance risks. You will contribute to engagements covering fraud, money laundering, terrorist financing, sanctions, and broader financial crime risk management. The role combines regulatory expertise, risk assessment, controls testing, data analysis, and client advisory work. You will work closely with senior client stakeholders while helping deliver practical, risk-based solutions in highly regulated environments. You will also mentor junior professionals, coordinate project activities, and contribute to strong engagement delivery. This is a collaborative consulting opportunity for a curious, relationship-focused professional who enjoys solving complex compliance challenges and developing others.
- Assess financial crime compliance risks across financial services organizations, with particular focus on fraud and fraud risk management.
- Support projects involving money laundering, terrorist financing, sanctions evasion, fraud, and other financial crime risks.
- Execute compliance monitoring activities, internal control risk assessments, and controls testing to evaluate whether policies, procedures, and operational practices are appropriately designed, risk-based, and effective.
- Analyze current and emerging regulations and assess their relevance and impact on client businesses and operating models.
- Support the development, enhancement, and implementation of financial crime risk management policies, procedures, and control frameworks.
- Monitor financial crime compliance activities and evaluate their effectiveness, identifying opportunities to strengthen processes and controls.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to support regulatory compliance and alignment with industry best practices.
- Support audits, effectiveness reviews, investigations, and other financial crime compliance assessments.
- Analyze, organize, interpret, and present data to identify risks, trends, control gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
- Translate operational and enterprise risks into clear insights and recommendations for client personnel, including executive-level stakeholders.
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with clients and develop a strong professional network across the financial services industry.
- Facilitate the successful execution of project work plans, including supporting scope definition, staffing, deliverables, timelines, and methodologies under management direction.
- Mentor, train, supervise, and coach Interns and Consultants, including reviewing work, coordinating activities, and supporting professional development.
- Identify engagement risks and opportunities to improve efficiency, quality, and client outcomes.
- Contribute to a positive team environment characterized by collaboration, open communication, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or another relevant discipline.
- At least 2 years of direct experience in financial crime risk, compliance, or audit within professional services or the Canadian financial services industry.
- Experience conducting audits of financial crime compliance programs and performing risk assessments.
- Broad knowledge of financial crime compliance, including fraud, fraud risk management, money laundering, terrorist financing, sanctions, and sanctions evasion.
- Experience with compliance monitoring, internal controls assessments, controls testing, regulatory analysis, and financial crime risk management frameworks.
- Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of compliance programs, policies, procedures, and operational controls.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to evaluate, summarize, organize, and interpret complex data.
- Ability to communicate operational and enterprise risks clearly to client stakeholders, including executives.
- Strong project management and team leadership capabilities, with experience mentoring, supervising, coordinating, and reviewing the work of others.
- Excellent written, verbal, presentation, relationship-building, and negotiation skills.
- Strong client-service mindset with the ability to establish trust and develop productive professional relationships.
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for emerging trends and developments in financial crime, operational risk, enterprise risk, and regulatory compliance.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; experience with Copilot is an asset.
- Experience with model risk is an asset.
- Professional certification such as Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is required, or candidates must be actively pursuing an applicable certification.
- Authorization to work in Canada without current or future sponsorship is required.
- CAD $72,000–$108,000 annual salary range for a full-time equivalent schedule.
