Freshwater Strategy Director

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Freshwater Strategy Director based in India.

This is a senior conservation leadership opportunity focused on advancing freshwater protection and resilience across the Asia Pacific region. The role will shape regional strategies addressing freshwater biodiversity, water security, watershed resilience, and nature-based solutions. You will work across country programs and global teams to strengthen the scale and impact of freshwater conservation initiatives. The position combines scientific expertise, strategic planning, partnership development, fundraising, and stakeholder engagement. You will collaborate with governments, communities, corporations, financial institutions, and conservation partners to develop innovative and durable solutions. Working within a highly collaborative and matrixed international environment, you will help translate science and conservation priorities into practical strategies with measurable regional impact.

Accountabilities:
  • Develop and support the implementation of freshwater conservation strategies across Asia Pacific, including nature-based approaches for water provisioning and regulation and long-term freshwater protection.
  • Build strong partnerships with regional country teams, global colleagues, nonprofit organizations, communities, government agencies, corporations, financial institutions, and other external stakeholders to accelerate the pace, scale, and impact of conservation initiatives.
  • Strengthen scientific and technical capacity across country programs and refine freshwater conservation Theories of Change to improve conservation outcomes.
  • Facilitate innovative solutions to complex freshwater challenges by bringing together diverse stakeholders and balancing environmental, social, and economic priorities.
  • Ensure freshwater initiatives are effectively incorporated into regional portfolio management, supported by robust monitoring, evaluation, and learning frameworks aligned with organizational 2030 goals.
  • Serve as the regional focal point for the Nature4Water partnership and contribute to broader freshwater conservation networks and initiatives.
  • Partner with fundraising teams to identify and secure funding opportunities, develop proposals, engage donors, and build strategic partnerships supporting freshwater priorities across Asia Pacific.
  • Support communications and represent the organization at internal and external conferences, forums, meetings, and other subject-matter engagements.
  • Manage project budgets and, where required, coordinate matrixed teams and professional partners to deliver strategic conservation projects.
  • Undertake frequent international travel and occasional evening or weekend work, including field activities that may involve variable weather, remote locations, and challenging terrain.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in conservation, environmental science, natural resources, water management, or a related discipline, combined with at least 7 years of relevant professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven experience managing complex or multiple projects, including financial management, coordination of professional teams, and collaboration with external partners.
  • Demonstrated experience developing freshwater conservation recommendations grounded in strong scientific evidence.
  • Experience building and managing partnerships with nonprofit organizations, community groups, government agencies, or other relevant stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge of current and emerging trends, methodologies, and practices in freshwater conservation, with the ability to translate scientific knowledge into effective regional strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing, or implementing freshwater conservation policies, programs, and plans.
  • Ability to translate scientific concepts and technical innovations into practical conservation applications and scalable solutions.
  • Strong strategic thinking, communication, negotiation, and stakeholder-management skills, with sound judgment, diplomacy, active listening, and interpersonal awareness.
  • Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary, decentralized, and matrixed teams, including the ability to influence without direct authority.
  • Fundraising and grant-writing experience, including donor engagement and proposal development.
  • Advanced degree such as a Master’s or PhD in a relevant field is preferred.
  • 7–10 years of conservation or related professional experience is preferred, along with multilingual or cross-cultural experience.
  • Collaborative, creative, adaptable, and comfortable working with ambiguity, complexity, and calculated risk.
  • Strong alignment with conservation, sustainability, diversity, equity, inclusion, and broader environmental values.
