The City of Chesapeake’s Department of Public Works is seeking a motivated, experienced, and highly organized professional to join our Facilities Maintenance team as a Project Manager. This position plays a key role in overseeing the maintenance, renovation, and construction of City-owned facilities, helping ensure that municipal buildings remain safe, functional, efficient, and sustainable for the employees and residents who rely on them.

The Project Manager provides leadership and oversight for a wide range of facility-related projects, coordinating with City staff, architects, engineers, contractors, and consultants to ensure projects are completed efficiently, within budget, on schedule, and in accordance with applicable standards and codes.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Provide project management and administrative oversight for complex Public Works projects, including municipal buildings, parks, renovations, and general construction, with responsibility for budgeting, scheduling, quality assurance, and quality control.
- Coordinate the planning, design, and development of municipal facility projects in collaboration with City departments, professional consultants, architects, and engineers.
- Oversee routine and emergency maintenance, repairs, renovations, and construction activities across City-owned facilities to support operational needs and maintain building functionality.
- Administer design, construction, and maintenance contracts, ensuring compliance with contract specifications, project schedules, applicable building codes, safety requirements, and regulatory standards.
- Coordinate and monitor the work of architects, engineers, construction inspectors, maintenance technicians, contractors, and consultants to ensure projects meet established objectives and performance expectations.
- Review project plans, technical documents, progress reports, submittals, contractor payment applications, and other construction administration materials for accuracy, compliance, and completeness.
- Monitor project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and overall performance, identifying potential challenges and implementing solutions to keep projects on track.
- Prepare technical reports, project updates, and recommendations for the Facilities Division Manager to support operational planning and informed decision-making.
- Provide leadership and supervision to the Facilities Maintenance Superintendent, supporting workforce coordination, accountability, and effective service delivery.

Required Qualifications:
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in construction management, project management, planning, public administration, architecture, urban design, or closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of six years of relevant, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record in compliance with the City Driving Standards.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
