Job Description

Summary:

The Operations Team Leader performs duties under the general direction of the Operations Supervisor and supervises skilled staff on a wide variety of tasks involving plant operations. Additionally, they assist the Operations Supervisor in the planning, management, administration and work accomplished on their assigned team/shift. The two open positions will work on the overnight schedule, 9:30 p.m. until 8:00 a.m.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervision (40%):
    • Encourages and leads a group of employees.
    • Enforces company policies and procedures.
    • Fosters a positive work environment.
    • Coordinates and assists with training and coaching of Operations staff to ensure compliance with state, local and departmental policies and procedures.
    • Mentors Operations staff for career path advancement.
    • Monitors quality of work assigned to employees.
    • Holds staff accountable to complete required job tasks.
    • Provides Operations Supervisor with input on employee performance, i.e. annual performance evaluations, goal progress, disciplinary actions.
    • Assists with planning and scheduling the work assignments for staff as needed.
    • Communicates critical and routine information effectively and in a timely manner.
    • Participates in interviews and new hire onboarding process.
  • Operations Technician (60%):
    • Independently perform rounds to monitor and operate all liquid and solids processes within required standards of performance.
    • Place equipment and treatment systems in and out of service preceding or following maintenance and contractor activities, power outages, and high flow events.
    • Perform non-routine or emergency operational tasks, such as equipment shutdowns or start-ups, following approved SOPs.
    • Conduct routine quality control testing using approved analytical methods to include collecting representative samples, moisture analysis, pH, jar testing, settleability testing, and analysis of results.
    • Review WRRF performance data and trends, make recommendations to improve performance, and implement process adjustments.
    • Maintain accurate operational and compliance records such as daily process logs, shift reports, incident, and high-flow reports.
    • Accurately identify and diagnose root causes of operational issues, provide recommendations, and implement corrective actions.
    • Perform needed routine maintenance, input maintenance work requests, and coordinate prioritization of work orders with maintenance team.
    • Participate in advisory committees to provide recommendations on plant or process upgrades.
    • Monitor chemical and biosolids inventories, supervise contractors for offloading and transfer.
  • Manages special projects as needed.
  • Acts on behalf of the Operations Supervisor as needed.
  • Other duties as required.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) equivalent required.
  • Two (2) years of AlexRenew experience in operation of the wastewater treatment plant required upon successful completion of the AlexRenew Team Lead program.
  • Currently in the role of Operations Technician II or higher required.
  • Successful completion of the AlexRenew Team Lead program within one year of accepting the Operations Team Lead position required.
  • Virginia Wastewater Works Class 1 or 2 license, maintain active license required.
  • Association of Boards of Certification (ABC) Professional Operator Class II or must obtain within one year of accepting position as Operations Team Leader; maintain active certification required.
  • Knowledge of AlexRenew plant operations including offsite pump stations required.
  • Ability to interpret technical prints, drawings, diagrams, equipment manuals and process schematics required.
  • Possess and maintains valid driver’s license required.
  • Develop and demonstrate leadership skills for motivating staff, raising staff morale, encouraging individual and team accomplishments and improving productivity.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Good computer skills in the use of Microsoft Office, SCADA and CMMS.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that an employee may perform on an occasional to regular basis while performing functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and stand for nine hours a day. The employee occasionally lifts up to 49 pounds and/or moves up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include depth perception, near and far acuity, color and field of vision. The employee would be required to communicate with management and coworkers, and to listen for emergency sirens and alarms.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Environmental conditions necessitate following strict safety guidelines and use of Personal Protective Equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee performs work indoors in a climate-controlled environment, with outdoor trips between buildings and some outdoor work required. Some areas are hot and humid at times.
