About This Position

SUMMARY/PURPOSE

The Electrical Program Instructor position is responsible for providing quality instruction to diverse adult learners aligned with the Council on Occupational Education’s standards for Pre-Apprentice Construction certification. This position works continuously to support Summit’s mission to prepare students for living-wage jobs through training, curriculum development, and classroom management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Instruction and Curriculum Development:

  • Deliver Instruction: Teach students in a competency-based format through lectures, demonstrations, and other recognized instructional techniques.
  • Design and Maintain Curriculum: Create and continuously improve course descriptions, lesson plans, and course outlines that ensure student safety, are developmentally appropriate, and appeal to a variety of learning styles.
  • Maintain Course Standards: Teach program course objectives as established by Summit Academy OIC.
  • Field Trips: Coordinate, lead, and supervise student field trips to advance learning.

Classroom and Learning Environment Management:

  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and grades, ensuring timely submission of all academic reports.
  • Policy Enforcement: Enforce school and campus policies related to academics and attendance, fostering a disciplined and respectful learning environment.
  • Assessment: Regularly use multiple forms of assessment to evaluate student progress and determine grades, adhering to established standards and criteria.
  • Safety: Monitor the safety of students, the classroom, and the tools according to safety guidelines.
  • Maintain Inventory: Manage tool and material inventory necessary to meet course objectives.

Student Engagement and Support:

  • Individualized Instruction: Plan and implement differentiated strategies to address the diverse learning needs and styles of adult students.
  • Professional Development: Stay current with industry trends and opportunities by continuously developing professional and technical skills.
  • Behavioral Modeling: Teach and model pro-social behavioral patterns conducive to success in the construction industry, such as safety, ethics, employability, and related skills.

Institutional Contribution & Collaboration:

  • Community Participation: Actively participate in curriculum and system task forces, support local campus events such as orientation and graduation, and engage in various workshops and meetings.
  • Learning Culture: Contribute to a learning culture by collaborating with colleagues, sharing best practices, and participating in professional development opportunities.
  • Substitute: Substitute teach for other instructors as necessary.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Electrician Essentials: Demonstrated knowledge of the electrical field.
  • Teaching: Ability to effectively teach and demonstrate to individuals with varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.
  • Communication: Excellent communication skills, especially oral, interpersonal, and presentation to large audiences.
  • Classroom Management: Strong skills in managing a classroom and maintaining a safe, engaging, and orderly learning environment.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Technical: Basic computer proficiency.
  • Environment: Willingness to work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates in a professional school setting, which requires instructors to maintain a professional appearance and attitude. The work environment is fast-paced and requires time management and prioritization of job duties. This role will work indoors and outdoors and be exposed to various construction and electrical environments, requiring industry knowledge and safety. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work with natural and synthetic materials.
  • Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to stoop, crouch, bend, and complete other similar functions.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time, exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA); it is not eligible for overtime pay. Hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Some evenings and weekends may be required to meet the expectations of this position.

TRAVEL

Local travel may be required to fulfill job duties.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • A high school diploma or General Education Equivalent (GED).
  • Completion of a course of study in the electrician trade under the direction and supervision of an established school or apprenticeship program.
  • A minimum of 4000 hours of recent experience as an electrician, or a combination of two years related post-secondary training and hands-on occupational experience.
  • 1-2 years of teaching experience, preferably with adult learners.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • More than 2 years of teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching adults.
  • OSHA Certification.
