About This Position

Oakland Community College is seeking a full-time faculty, Sign Language Interpreter Instructor, who will participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses, and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the strategic plan of the program and college.

Anticipated start date: August 2025

$62,440 - $70,857 Starting Base Salary ($62,440 - $112,678 full salary range for the 2025-26 Salary Schedule).

Potential for additional pay:

Overload – 60% over base

This description is intended to indicate the types of duties, responsibilities, knowledge, and skills requested of the employee assigned this title. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list.

  • Teach all levels of Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) courses, both online and face-to-face, ensuring effective learning outcomes and fostering an inclusive learning environment.
  • Integrate cultural competency into the curriculum, ensuring that students gain an in-depth understanding of Deaf culture, community, and history.
  • Develop, implement, and assess college-level curriculum for ASL-English interpreting, focusing on interpreter professional development and community interpreting.
  • Coordinate adjunct sections, including selecting and managing course textbooks, resources, and teaching materials.
  • Provide feedback to students on their progress through both formative and summative assessments, helping them build Sign Language interpreting skills
  • Actively contribute to Sign Language interpreter professional development through engagement in workshops, conferences, and training related to ASL-English interpreting and the wider interpreting field.
  • Communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff, fostering a collaborative and respectful environment.
  • Mentor students and colleagues in professional standards of practice for interpreters and advocate for educational interpreting best practices.
  • Participate in departmental committees and contribute to the broader academic community.
  • Utilize learning management systems (LMS), specifically D2L, for course delivery, grading, and student interaction.
  • Engage with accreditation processes, ensuring all SLI courses meet academic and professional standards.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) is a must.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching ASL and interpreting, with an emphasis on interpreter training.
  • Strong knowledge of Deaf culture and the ability to incorporate Deaf culture education into the curriculum.
  • Passion for interpreter professional development, with experience in mentoring and supporting students in their career path as interpreters.
  • Familiarity with community interpreting in various of fields.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in an environment with varied backgrounds and perspectives, demonstrating cultural competency in interactions with students, faculty, and staff.

EDUCATION:

Master's degree or higher or equivalent in American Sign Language Interpreting, Sign Language Interpreting, Sign Language Studies, Deaf Education, Deaf Studies/Sign Language Training, Interpreter Pedagogy, Linguistics, Special Education - Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Education, Liberal Arts, Journalism, English, Communication, Engineering, Public Administration, Social Work, or another practice profession with recent experience in teaching sign language and/or interpreting.

Must have one (1) of the following:

  • American Sign Language Teacher's Association Certification
  • American Sign Language Communication Proficiency Interview 4 or above
  • Interpreter Certification: RID CI, CT; NAD, NAD-RID-NIC, CDI EIPA, ED, K-12, BEI

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of two years’ experience in college-level curriculum development for Sign Language interpreting or related courses.
