Job Description

Position Summary

The Assistant Engineer is responsible for supporting the maintenance, repair, and safe operation of all machinery and equipment aboard marine vessels. This role plays a critical part in ensuring vessel seaworthiness, regulatory compliance, and the efficient performance of the engine department.

The Assistant Engineer will assist in maintaining engineering systems, monitoring safety and environmental protection measures, and contributing to the overall operational readiness of the vessel.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the operation, maintenance, and repair of main engines, generators, pumps, and auxiliary systems.
  • Support the proper operation, maintenance, and preservation of all engine department machinery and equipment.
  • Conduct routine inspections to ensure equipment is functioning correctly and identify potential issues.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical problems
  • Participate in engine room watchstanding, monitoring equipment performance, and responding to alarms
  • Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, and repair records
  • Ensure the cleanliness and proper condition of all engine department spaces
  • Promote safety and pollution prevention practices in compliance with regulations and company standards
  • Assist in the efficient use of consumables, stores, and spare parts
  • Participate in and perform emergency duties, including fire and collision drills
  • Take initiative in emergencies without requiring direct instruction
Compliance & Program Responsibilities
  • Utilize and support OAG’s Preventive Maintenance System (PMS) and machine history programs
  • Assist in the implementation and adherence to company safety and environmental programs, including:
    • Lube oil analysis
    • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
    • Water treatment systems
    • Electrical safety protocols
    • Heat stress management
    • Sewage handling procedures
    • Refrigerant handling
    • Gas-free engineering practices
  • Demonstrate competency in the use of condition monitoring equipment, including basic interpretation of results.
Additional Duties

Masters and Department Heads may assign additional responsibilities to support specific vessel operations and mission requirements.

Required Skills & Competencies
  • Basic understanding of marine engineering systems (engines, pumps, generators, etc.)
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on maintenance skills
  • Knowledge of shipboard safety procedures and regulatory compliance
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • Solid problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Effective communication skills
