Title: Test Cell Technician – Level 3
Reports To: Test Supervisor
Department: Powertrain Testing
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Location: Iowa / Michigan (Detroit Test Center)
Position Summary
The Test Cell Technician – Level 3 is responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of engine and vehicle test cells. This role performs advanced testing activities with minimal supervision and supports complex test programs, including engine preparation, dynamometer operation, fabrication of test fixtures, and troubleshooting.
The position requires a high level of technical competency, the ability to manage multiple tests simultaneously, and frequent interaction with customer engineers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Operate and maintain engine and vehicle test benches, including associated instrumentation and equipment
• Set up production and prototype engines, vehicles, and test systems
• Execute and support complex testing activities with minimal assistance
• Organize and manage test-related equipment, data, and documentation
• Communicate regularly with customer engineers regarding test status and results
• Manage and maintain multiple test programs simultaneously
• Develop and execute automated test sequences using test cell software
• Support facility and equipment issues affecting test operations
• Utilize downtime to support organizational initiatives (e.g., continuous improvement, 5S, safety)
• Perform all work in accordance with company SOPs and ISO procedures
• Follow all safety requirements, including proper use of PPE, tools, and equipment
• Perform routine maintenance checks on assigned test systems
• Maintain a clean and organized work environment (housekeeping)
• Report issues, failures, or abnormalities to supervision in a timely manner
• Attend meetings and training sessions as required
• Perform additional duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities. May provide informal guidance and training to Level 1 and Level 2 Technicians.
Required Education and Experience
• High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree in automotive technology, mechanical technology, or a related technical field preferred
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in engine testing, dynamometer operation, or a comparable technical environment, including at least 2 years at a Level 2 (or equivalent) scope
• Valid driver's license required; ability to operate vehicles for test purposes
Preferred Qualifications
• Powered industrial truck (forklift) certification per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178
• Aerial/scissor lift certification
• ASE certification or equivalent
• Prior experience in an ISO-certified testing environment

Technical Skills and Knowledge
• Strong understanding of internal combustion engine (ICE) operation, testing, and repair
• Ability to operate dynamometer test cells
• Proficiency with electronic diagnostic and measurement equipment, including:
? Oscilloscopes, multimeters, and current probes
? Signal generators, frequency counters, and spectrum analyzers
• Understanding of mechanical measurement devices (temperature, pressure, flow, etc.)
• Ability to wire electrical systems including sensors, actuators, controls, VFDs, and motors
• Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation
• Proficiency with machine tools (drill press, band saw, sander, etc.)
• Proficiency with hand tools used in engine maintenance
• Proficiency in welding and fabrication
• Working knowledge of computer systems and software, including:
? Microsoft Word, Excel, and email
? Test cell control software
? Combustion measurement systems (e.g., Cyflex), engine communication software, and file transfer tools (e.g., FileZilla)
• Ability to safely operate shop and facility equipment (forklift, boom lift, scissor lift, telehandler, etc.); Excel provides task-specific training and certification where required
Safety-Sensitive Designation
This position is designated as safety-sensitive due to the operation of heavy equipment, engine and vehicle test systems, and exposure to high-energy mechanical and electrical systems. The position is subject to Excel Engineering's Drug and Alcohol Policy, including pre-employment and post-incident testing where permitted by applicable state law.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to perform heavy work, including:
• Lifting up to 100 lbs occasionally
• Lifting up to 50 lbs frequently
• Lifting up to 20 lbs constantly
Physical activities include, but are not limited to, climbing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Visual acuity requirements include close visual attention for data analysis, inspection, and operation of equipment and measurement devices.
Work Environment
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and may include exposure to:
• High noise levels
• Moving mechanical equipment and vehicles
• Electrical systems and elevated work areas
• Heat, fumes, and chemicals
Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times.
Travel Requirements
Travel requirements vary based on project needs and may include occasional overnight travel (estimated less than 10%).
