Position Summary
-
Under general direction, protects, promotes, and optimizes health and abilities. Prevents illness and injury. Alleviates suffering through the diagnosis and treatment. Advocates for patients and their families. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care.

Provides direct nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process, performs technical nursing functions, and upholds the standards of practice of a professional nurse.

Position Responsibilities
-
Unit Specific Position Responsibilities- Participates in precepting and mentoring while providing education / orientation to staff, students, and others.
- Performs related work per orientation and position competency checklists and skills validation.
- Performs other assigned duties.
- Utilizes critical thinking and evidence-based practice to facilitate the nursing process in the provision of patient care.
- Assures compliance with the Iowa Nurse Practice Act and other regulatory standards.
- Performs according to the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.
- Considers age, growth and development of the patient when planning, teaching and providing care.
- Documents and maintains data on patient’s electronic and paper record.
- Functions as a leader when delegating/supervising aspects of care to team members.
- Assures safe, therapeutic environment for patients, families, visitors, and staff.
- Applies teaching/learning concepts to patient and family education.
- Communicates and collaborates with interdisciplinary team.
- Acts as a patient advocate.
- Assures patient safety with medication administration and treatment procedures.
- Participates and maintains quality improvement initiatives to promote positive patient outcomes.
- Assists patient, families, and visitors with various needs and utilizes specific communication tools to enhance customer service.
- Monitor, record, and report symptoms or changes in patients’ conditions.
- Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records.
- Record patients’ medical information and vital signs.
- Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient conditions.
- Modify patient treatment plans as indicated by patient responses and conditions.
- Direct less-skilled nursing or healthcare personnel.
- Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, or evaluate patient care plans.
- Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity.
- Instruct individuals, families, or other groups on topics such as health education and disease prevention and develop health improvement programs.
- Prepare patients for and assist with examinations or treatments.
- Utilizes knowledge of available equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to effectively ensure the protection and safety of patients, data, and property.
- Obtains insurance prior authorizations for referrals and imaging orders.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
-
Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):
-
Licensed as a Registered Nurse and authorized by the State of Iowa to practice nursing or has active multistate license approved by the Nurse Licensure Compact.

Achievement of Baccalaureate degree in nursing within 6 years of hire if hired after January 1, 2014.

Basic Life Support (BLS) training, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

Mandatory Reporter training or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

Organizational Requirements:

Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:-
Baccalaureate degree in nursing.
-
Professional certification in nursing specialty.
-
Oncology Certification
-

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:-
Proficient in communication skills.

Ability to pursue and foster a sense of team and partnership across all disciplines.

Ability to communicate effectively, in English, with diverse population groups.

Ability to be self-directed, flexible, and able to adapt to change.

Ability to communicate effectively in a professional and tactful manner with physicians, staff, patients and/or their representatives.

Ability to read and understand chart documentation.

Ability to demonstrate basic computer skills.

Ability to read, write and understand the English language.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:-
Two years of experience in a clinical oncology setting.
