About This Position

Position Title: Assoc/Construction Safety Manager

Location: Des Moines, IA, United States

Description:
This is a multi-level posting. Candidates may be considered for any of the posted levels, depending on education, years of experience and depth of expertise.

Join our team as a Construction Safety Manager supporting company projects including thermal power plants, renewable generation projects including wind, solar, and energy storage, decommissioning, environmental, communications, facilities, asset acquisitions, and other projects as assigned. This role leads field safety execution, drives Zero Injury initiatives, and ensures regulatory compliance for safety and environmental across construction, maintenance, outage, and operating environments. The Construction Safety Manager partners with project managers, engineers, contractors, and field personnel to embed a strong safety culture and environmental stewardship into every phase of project delivery to minimize workplace hazards and environmental impacts while maintaining efficient operations.

Responsibilities:
Safety Leadership & Program Management
• Lead and implement Zero Injury Safety Program, Emergency Response and support environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives across all project portfolios.
• Develop, implement, and manage safety programs supporting construction, major maintenance, and outage activities.
• Collaborate with internal teams, trade partners, OEMs, EPC contractors, and joint ventures to ensure consistent safety practices.
Field Safety Oversight
• Conduct regular jobsite safety audits, hazard assessments, and field observations to identify leading indicators.
• Monitor high-risk activities including major construction equipment operations, confined space, hot work, lock out tag out, energization, and work at heights.
• Engage with crews to identify hazards, verify controls, and strengthen safety ownership.
• Exercise stopwork authority when unsafe conditions or behaviors are observed.
• Review tailboards, observe job setup, inspect vehicles/equipment, and verify PPE and highrisk procedures.
• Promote environmentally responsible construction practices to include monitor erosion control, stormwater protection, spill prevention and waste management practices.
Training & Workforce Development
• Deliver onboarding, jobsite safety orientations, and targeted training for projects.
• Provide instruction on fall protection, electrical safety/MAD, confined space, LOTO, equipment operation, and other highrisk activities.
• Support trainthetrainer efforts and integrate changes in OSHA, NESC, ANSI, NFPA, and internal policies.
• Provide coaching and mentorship to all levels of project personnel on safe work practices.
Incident Response & Continuous Improvement
• Lead incident reporting, investigation, causal analysis, and corrective action development.
• Apply Human Performance Improvement (HPI) principles to drive organizational learning and increased safety performance.
• Support storm response planned and unplanned outages, and emergent field needs.
• Coordinate emergency response procedures with local authorities and the project team.
Compliance & Reporting
• Ensure compliance with federal and state to include OSHA, NESC, ANSI, NFPA, DOT, DNR, EPA and local regulations.
• Track safety performance, analyze trends, and prepare required reports.
• Maintain accurate training records, audit documentation, and other safety data.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, or a related field. (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)

Six years of related experience in a safety role, preferably in the electric utility industry or construction industry.

Eight or more years of related experience in a safety role, preferably in the electric utility industry or construction industry required for the construction safety manager level.

Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), or Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) credential is preferred.

Candidate must possess OSHA 30-hour Outreach Training for Construction within 90 days of hire.

Experience supporting construction, maintenance, or operations in utility environments is preferred.

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Strong knowledge of OSHA, NESC, ANSI, NFPA, EPA, DNR, LOTO, fall protection, confined space, MAD, and industry safety standards.

Strong communication, teamwork, coaching, and problem solving skills.

Willingness to travel across project sites and respond to after hours emergency needs.

Work Environment and Physical Demands: General office, industrial plant, and field environments.

Outdoor field and site visits may include walking on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs/ladder not limited to utility infrastructure that may require the appropriate use of personal protective equipment. Physical demands may include lifting/carrying equipment, materials, and small tools weighing up to 50 pounds.

Ability to lead training, perform field audits, facilitate investigations, and influence across diverse teams.
