Job Description:
The City of Chesapeake is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Payroll Technician II to support payroll operations within the Public Works Department. This role plays a key part in ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time while maintaining compliance with all applicable regulations.
Working under the general supervision of the Department Payroll Supervisor, you’ll serve as a trusted resource for payroll processes, employee support, and data accuracy.

What You’ll Do
  • Process weekly and semi-monthly payroll using Kronos and Munis, serving as a primary point of contact for payroll-related questions
  • Review and audit time records, attendance, and leave balances to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Calculate wages, including overtime, shift differentials, and deductions in accordance with policies and regulations
  • Maintain and update payroll records in compliance with City standards
  • Support personnel actions such as onboarding, promotions, transfers, and separations, ensuring accurate payroll setup
  • Respond to employee inquiries related to pay, tax withholdings, and deductions in a timely, professional manner
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws and regulations
  • Provide guidance and training on payroll and HR systems and processes
  • Reconcile payroll accounts and resolve discrepancies as needed
  • Process payroll-related transactions including purchase orders, invoices, and refunds

Required Qualifications:
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in accounting or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong knowledge of payroll practices, procedures, and basic accounting principles.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with a high level of accuracy in data processing and recordkeeping.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with employees at all levels.
