About Humane Society of North Texas

Founded in 1905, the Humane Society of North Texas is the oldest animal welfare organization in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. HSNT serves animals in need by providing services such as pet adoptions, spay/neuter surgeries and low-cost vaccinations, returning lost pets to their owners, cruelty investigations and humane euthanasia. We operate two pet adoption centers in Tarrant County as well as PetSmart and PetCo Cat Adoption Centers and an equine ranch located in Johnson County.


Essential Functions:

  • Assist Manager in overseeing effective operation of the Animal Care department to ensure compliance with the goals of HSNT
  • Assist Manager in preparation, implementation, enforcement, and updating Standard Operating Procedures to maximize efficiency and care of animals consistent with HSNT’s standard of excellence.
  • Assist Manager establishing and ensuring safety and sanitation policies are followed throughout the Animal Care department in order to maintain HSNT’s standards of excellence.
  • Assist Manager to define and implement strategic goals and objectives for the Animal Care Department; identify and evaluate trends and options, choose a course of action, and evaluate outcomes.
  • Work effectively with others (including co-workers and customers) by sharing ideas in a constructive and positive manner; listening to and objectively considering ideas and suggestions from others; keeping commitments; keeping others informed of work progress, timetables and issues; and addressing problems and issues constructively to find mutually acceptable and practical solutions
  • Assist Manager maintaining healthy, secure/safe, sanitary, and pleasant conditions for employees, volunteers, customers, animals, property and supplies at the shelter. Oversee and support movement of shelter animals into Animal Care.
  • Assist Manager ensuring all animals within the facility are treated with respect, proper animal handling, care and follow up care, as needed (medical testing, vaccinations, treatments, animal aggression testing, bathing/grooming, etc).
  • Assist Manager performing end of day closeout, balancing the transactions and maintaining accuracy of all monies and related documentation handled by the department.
  • Represent the Humane Society of North Texas by providing excellent customer service while protecting the confidential information on customers and donors.
  • Assist Manager in maintaining quality service by providing best practices, analyzing, resolving customer service problems, and recommending system improvements.
  • Assist Manager providing an atmosphere of stability and support for others and promoting teamwork and positive interaction inter-departmentally.
  • Assist Manager recruiting, training, evaluating, mentoring, developing, and disciplining of all Animal Care Staff while utilizing department leads.
  • Assist Manager with staff scheduling and managing payroll hours for staff, monitoring PTO, overtime, attendance, and tardiness.
  • Assist Manager in ensuring interactions among peers, volunteers, staff, animal, and public are in alignment with HSNT policies, procedures, and values to uphold HSNT standards of excellence and are professional, timely, action oriented and pleasant..

Education, Experience, Certificates and Licensing Requirements:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • One year experience in a veterinarian office, boarding facility or shelter setting
  • Associate’s degree in business administration or management, a plus

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities Needed to Perform the Essential Functions:

  • Must be detail oriented and have strong time management skills.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures, as well as follow instructions
  • Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to handle animals safely and with patience and gentleness.
  • Must be patient, courteous and work well in a fast-paced and changing environment, which at times can be stressful. .
  • Ability to accurately communicate with detailed information in written, oral, paper or computerized format.
  • Bilingual a plus, but not required

  • Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus.
  • Must be able to work standing for 6 or more hours and be able to bend/kneel repeatedly and have a reasonable degree of agility to move through tightly cramped areas in various situations.

Working Conditions:

  • The individual performing this job may be required to work more than 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week.
  • By nature of the industry, this position may be consistently exposed to airborne particles and/or animal allergens and odors. There also may be occasional exposure to dead, sick, unruly, and/or dangerous animals in addition to exposure to parasites and infectious diseases.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate-high
