Job Description

Position Description:
The Referral Coordinator assists patients by coordinating referral appointments and works with insurance companies and care providers to share essential information. The Referral Coordinator performs general clerical tasks such as answering phone calls and emails, maintains patient records, and verifies insurance information. Frequently interacts with patients, doctors, and insurance companies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma
Strong customer service focus
Effective verbal and written communication skills

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Schedules and arranges referral appointments
Sets appointments, sends reminders, and provides patients with information about referral appointments
Maintains ongoing tracking and appropriate documentation on referrals to promote team awareness and ensure patient safety.
Ensures complete and accurate registration, including patient demographic and current insurance information.
Ensures that referrals are addressed and facilitates timely scheduling of appointments.
Assembles information concerning patient's clinical background and referral needs.
Contact review organizations and insurance companies to ensure prior approval requirements are met. Present necessary medical information such as history, diagnosis and prognosis.
Assists patients in problem solving potential issues related to the health care system, financial or social barriers (e.g., request interpreters as appropriate, transportation services or prescription assistance).
Develops knowledge of available local, community, or national resources.
Obtains essential medical records.
Ensures that patient records are up to date and kept in accordance with laws and regulations.
Obtains up to date insurance information.
Ensures preauthorization for new patient visits.
Communication
Adheres to established regulations concerning patient information and privacy.
Other duties as assigned

Requires full range of body motion including assisting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 20 lbs.
Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

SUPERVISION
The Referral Coordinator reports to the Vice President of Clinical Services.
