About This Position

The HUC interacts with both internal and external Customers and utilizes the hospital information. Perform order entry, transcribe physician orders, and retrieve patient data.

The HUC maintains and processes all medical record information. work is prioritized with the input of the RNs. All work is conducted in a manner that supports the Mission, Vision, and Values of the hospital.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Follow attendance standards and expectations.
  • Complete all hospital wide mandatory educational programs.
  • Complete all orientation requirements and departmental competency testing requirements.
  • Adhere to hospital policies and procedures as well as department-specific policies and procedures.
  • Adapt to floating to similar units when required and adapt to changing patient assignments as volume and acuity fluctuate.
  • Utilize computer skills to access patient related data, order entry, and hospital systems.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal, written, and telephone communication skills with patients, families/significant others, physicians, and coworkers.
  • Communicate using phone and paging systems.
  • Update cellular phone information in the computer daily.
  • Manage physical resources (supplies and equipment) appropriately, assuring that adequate supplies and equipment are available and in good working order.
  • Stock nurse's station with all forms and records needed.
  • File necessary information and faxes orders to the pharmacy.
  • Maintain confidentiality and privacy while communicating patient information and managing medical records.
  • Access and retrieve results from various tests and imaging procedures and promptly communicates critical results to the RN.
  • Transcribe order promptly and accurately.
  • Enter patient data into the computer, on Kardex and MAR.
  • Consult with MD or RN to clarify orders and communicate when an order cannot be carried out.
  • Assemble medical record for new admissions and dis-assembles chart for discharged patients using medical record criteria and forwards the chart to the department.
  • Participate in patient placement by:
  • Assure that discharges are communicated quickly to the central HUC station
  • Assure that open beds are identified and made ready by housekeeping in a timely manner
  • Update the nursing supervisor, admitting and the nursing director on patient flow issues
  • Communicate new admissions and discharges to the staff in a timely manner.
  • Maintain control boards and unit specific logs including restraint lists, call-in information, and lab results. Post-patient care team assignments.
  • Demonstrate knowledge regarding patient rights, advanced directives, occurrence reporting, and disaster preparedness.
  • Transport blood and blood products.
  • Enter staff payroll entries in the Kronos system as directed.
  • Participate in problem-solving activities to address process issues, personnel issues and performance issues.
  • Communicate concerns with the appropriate person professionally and tone, and work proactively to avoid problems.


WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • High School Graduate
  • CPR certification preferred
  • Bilingual a plus but not required


Experience

  • One year hospital or clinic related setting experience preferred.
  • Medical terminology desirable
