Founded in 1971, Centers for New Horizons, Inc. (Centers) is a nonprofit organization that assists children, youth, and families to become self-reliant. With 100+ full-time staff, most of whom live in or near its service communities, Centers provides programs in seven locations throughout the Bronzeville and Riverdale communities of Chicago's Southside that reach over 1,000 individuals daily.
Position Overview
Work collaboratively with partnering school to coordinate in-school and after-school academic, social-emotional, and enrichment interventions. Provides individual career assessments, group life skill sessions, educational and vocational guidance services. Provide crisis intervention when needed. ensure the safety of all students and participants of the programs; facilitate strong working relationships with school principals, other administrators, teachers and other school staff, implement monthly events that engages the participants’ families in enriching and educational workshops. Collect, analyzes and organizes education, academic, life skills and career information through records, case notes, interviews and professional sources. Assist youth to understand and overcome social and emotional problems.
Please note the that this is a part time position with up to 20 hours a week.
Essential Functions
• Manage in-school and after-school programs in collaboration with students, teachers, parents, CNH and the school’s administration to develop new and sustainable programs.
• Collaborate and create plans for programs to be offered during school that directly relate to the compliance requirements of the program.
• Work with school leaders to develop and implement a recruitment plan for program and services
• Evaluate students using interviews, counseling sessions, aptitude and achievement tests, and other tools; assists students to understand their abilities, talents, interests and personality characteristics in order to develop realistic academic and career options.
• Counsel students to help them understand and deal with their social, behavioral ad emotional problems; provide students with life skills to manage problems before they occur and to enhance personal, social and academic growth.
• Assist students with career development and locating and applying for jobs, including writing resumes and improving job interviewing techniques
• Refer students to appropriate community resources and provides periodic reports of referral activity.
• Design, develop and present outreach materials and workshops for parents and community organizations.
• Coordinate and participate in career fairs and similar activities to facilitate job placement of students; assists individuals in educational development options.
• May teach classes and/or participate in research and follow-up activities to evaluate counseling.
• Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
Minimum of Associate's degree in Social Work with preferred or equivalent experience in a related field; education business, administration, political science and at least 3-5 years directly related experience that can be demonstrated to be applicable to the duties listed in the job description.
Training and Skills
Must be able to collect, evaluate, analyze, and organize data
Knowledge of educational development test administration and interpretation
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Ability to evaluate student applications and/or support documents.
Knowledge of psychosocial interviewing and counseling techniques
