About This Position
Starting wage is $58.92/hour. Starting wage is 90% of base wage until completion of probation.
This position is a Journey Level role responsible for performing skilled work in the construction, maintenance, repair, renovation, and tenant improvements of commercial buildings, offices, garages, warehouses, piers, and wharfs. Tasks include and are not limited to building inspections, carpentry, general facilities maintenance, painting, roofing, utilities, fencing, and other related duties as assigned.
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required. Formal education or training beyond high school is preferred.
Minimum of five (5) years’ paid experience performing a variety of skilled facilities maintenance work in a field such as carpentry, general maintenance, fencing, or painting.
Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification. Drive all job-related vehicles and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and CDL as required.

- Perform skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair, preventive maintenance, renovation, and tenant improvements of commercial buildings, offices, garages, warehouses, piers, and wharfs. Tasks include and are not limited to building inspections, carpentry, general facilities maintenance, painting, roofing, utilities, fencing and other related duties as assigned.
- Inspect assets and report findings, test systems, make adjustments as needed, repair and replace complete or integral parts of facilities, identify patterns, conduct proactive maintenance to ensure facilities are at optimal levels.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and service manuals. Assist with researching parts and estimates for labor and materials.
- Install new equipment or systems.
- Enter work order data on computers and handwritten work orders.
- Fill in for the Foreman or Lead as needed

- Knowledge in construction, maintenance and repair, preventive maintenance, renovation, and tenant improvements of commercial buildings, offices, garages, warehouses, piers, and wharfs.
- Working knowledge of applicable safety rules, regulations, and regulatory agencies.
- Ability to follow all Port policies and procedures and to require the same for subordinates.
- Must have a leadership style consistent with the Port of Tacoma “Teamwork” concept.
- Must be willing and able to attend staff meetings, supervisory, or technical training.
- Must have the ability to read and accurately comprehend material contained in manuals, specifications, memorandums, regulations and policies pertaining to job responsibilities and employment requirements.
- Must be alert to new methods and equipment that will improve and enhance a safe working environment, expedite job completion and provide cost savings.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Communication style must build positive customer relations.
- Must be able to estimate job costs and assist in planning yearly budgets.
- Must consistently treat others with respect.
- Must understand and be able to effectively communicate how personal and crew job performance relates to the achievement of the Port’s goals.
- Must be able to interact with the public and with co-workers, follow instructions, work independently, cope with stress and interact in group situations.
- Must be punctual and have good attendance.
- Must be physically capable of performing the demands of the job.
- Must be able to work any shift including night shift, weekends and overtime.
