Take your career to the next level as part of a dynamic Cardiothoracic Surgery Critical Care Service. Our APPs play an integral role in comprehensive perioperative care, managing patients across the full continuum—from initial consultation through postoperative recovery and discharge. You will work alongside experienced cardiothoracic surgeons, APPs, and multidisciplinary professionals in a high-acuity, cutting-edge environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesCritical Care Management- Manage patients recovering from complex cardiothoracic surgeries, including:
- Aortic surgery
- Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
- Thoracic surgery
- Valve surgery
- Partner closely with attending physicians and APP colleagues in the management of advanced mechanical circulatory support devices, including:
- ECMO
- Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps (IABPs)
- Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs)
- Impella
- Right Ventricular Assist Devices (RVADs)
- Perform and refine common ICU procedures, including:
- Bronchoscopy
- Central venous catheter placement
- Arterial line insertion
- Chest tube management
- Focus on optimizing patient experience, satisfaction, and clinical outcomes
- Deliver high-quality, evidence-based perioperative care
- Order and interpret relevant diagnostic studies
- Apply clinical judgment to guide timely and appropriate interventions
- Respond to critical and emergent situations
- Provide rapid assessment and stabilization until definitive treatment is implemented
- Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
- Strong interest or background in cardiothoracic surgery and/or critical care
- Comfortable practicing with a high level of autonomy in a fast-paced ICU setting
- Committed to teamwork, clinical excellence, and continuous professional growth
Education: Graduate of an Accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
Experience: 0
Licensure/Certification: Current state Licensed Nurse Practitioner (NP) and RN licensure required or Physician Assistant ( PA) , DEA license . AHA BLS-HCP certification required. Advanced Life Support certification preferred. Eligible for prescriptive authority in accordance with State regulations and as authorized by the Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine.
Other: Able to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers, good written and oral communication skills. Computer literacy required for automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
