About This Position

POSITION SUMMARY
-
The Sports Physical Therapy Resident is directly responsible to the Program Director and Program Coordinator and/or their designee, and has the responsibility for overall direction, utilization, supervision, instruction, and evaluation of professional and supportive staff, volunteers, and students in their area of the physical therapy department/facility.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Sports Residency Requirements

Didactic:
-
Weekly learning modules – 1 hour per week
-
Journal club 1 hour per month, leading at assigned site level
-
CSM 24 hours per year, including attendance and participation
-
Physician shadowing and surgery observation
-
Independent study , Case Study presentation including PROS tracking/review
-
Independent learning and tracking of hours/activities
-

Teaching:
-
Engagement in weekly learning modules – participation and leading modules
-

Athletic Event Coverage:
-
Responsible for evaluation, treatment and management of athletic injuries
-
Responsible for documentation of activities performed in athletic event coverage
-
Effectively track diagnosis and other relevant details for review with program faculty
-

Clinical Practice Responsibilities/Accountabilities: One-on-one mentoring up to 5 hours per week and non-mentored up to or exceeding 35 hours per week.
- Evaluations:
-
Responsible for the evaluation of all patients referred for physical therapy.
-
Responsible for completion and submission of all reports pertaining to the evaluation.
-
Effectively communicates with referral sources, other departments, and external agencies regarding evaluative findings and patient’s needs.

Treatment Quality:
-
Ensures that Physical Therapy Practices are consistent with the American Physical Therapy Association Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice and Standards of Practice policy in this manual
- Treats patients of all ages (e.g., infants, children, adolescents, adults, geriatrics, elderly, ages 0–120 years), race, creed, gender, and disability without bias or prejudice.
- Demonstrates respect and understanding of the patient’s right to treatment and right to involvement in treatment decisions. Patient centric shared decision making.
- Practices ethical responsibility based on the cultural, ethnic, and religious beliefs of the patients served as applicable by law.
- Demonstrates treatment skills that are rooted in evidence-based practice guidelines while balancing both patient and provider expectations and needs.
- Confers with the person(s) most closely associated with the active management of the patient to keep them informed of any additional patient needs, treatment modification, and/or progress.

Treatment Quantitative:
- Maintains a patient treatment schedule consistent with the needs of the department/facility.
- Practices caseload management as it pertains to NS, CXL and reschedules. Provides appropriate visits per referral, including frequency, duration based on POC determined with referring provider. Demonstrates the ability to manage the episode of care using both HEP and clinic visits
- Billing/CPT or RVU matches the time spent with patient, within department standards.
- Records and Reports:

Prepares and submits department/facility reports, assuring confidentiality of all records:
-
Evaluation reports/summaries.
-
Discharge reports/summaries.
-
Progress reports to referring physicians and agencies.

Daily notes completed in a timely fashion while supporting medical necessity

Special reports as requested by the Director and or Manager

- Professional Status and Public Relations:
-
Maintains current professional knowledge of techniques and trends in the field of Physical Therapy.

Attends conventions, meetings, or special courses whenever possible and shares gained information with the department/facility personnel.

Prepares and presents educational presentations to community groups as requested.
-
Maintains positive public relations with all community sources.

QUALIFICATIONS
-
Education, Experience, Certification and Licensure Requirements:
-
Must be a graduate of and have a certificate from an American Physical Therapy Association approved school of Physical Therapy; or a school approved by the World Congress of Physical Therapy; current state licensure is required. Must maintain and provide verification card for CPR certification including BLS/AED training.
