Position Summary:
The Shelter Attendant plays a critical role in ensuring a safe, welcoming, and stable environment for individuals and families temporarily residing at the Tamarac Family Non-Congregate Shelter. This role provides direct, on-site support through front desk operations, conflict de-escalation, monitoring of shelter grounds, and responding to resident needs in accordance with trauma-informed practices. Shelter Attendants help uphold daily shelter routines, maintain cleanliness standards, and assist guests in connecting with services and staff.

Reports to: Shelter Lead, Project Manager

Mission of Role:

Bayaud Works provides critical services and expertise in short- and long-term homeless sheltering, non-congregate and congregate emergency sheltering, and workforce support services. General Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:

  • Always greet residents, partner organizations, and guests with professionalism and warmth while identifying internal and external guests.
  • Monitor shelter grounds and conduct routine safety checks inside and outside the facility.
  • Ensure resident compliance with program expectations including but not limited to room checks, participation in case management, community events, and keeping up with knowledge of shelter activity.
  • Maintain accurate shift logs and incident reports in alignment with policy.
  • Respond calmly and effectively to emergencies, including behavioral health or medical crises.
  • Communicate safety concerns promptly through proper channels of supervision while upholding privacy policies for shelter guests.
  • Facilitate quiet hours and maintain safe sleep environments in accordance with trauma-informed standards.
  • Assist in cleaning and maintaining common areas and family units.
  • Provide support during resident move-ins/outs, including light packing and documentation.
  • Provide meal support in accordance with shelter and ServSafe protocols.
  • Support youth- and family-friendly programming led by Engagement staff.
  • Participate in required trainings, staff meetings, and debriefings.
  • All other duties as assigned by Shelter Leads, Project Manager, or Shelter Director.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to trauma-informed, client-centered service.
  • Capacity to remain calm, professional, and solution-focused during crisis situations.
  • Familiarity with de-escalation techniques, harm reduction, and shelter environments.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the diverse experiences of individuals experiencing homelessness.
  • Basic computer literacy and ability to complete electronic documentation and logs.

Expected Hours of Work:
Varies – 24/7 Shelter Operations (Evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required)

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to stand, walk, lift, bend, and engage in active programming with children.
  • Must be comfortable working both indoors and outdoors, including in community settings.

Work Environment:

Bayaud Works is a subsidiary of AC Disaster Consulting. Our Temporary Staffing Service partners with Federal, State, City, County, and private employers to provide high-quality staffing and operational support. Bayaud Works was created to provide opportunities for individuals with barriers to employment and has since expanded to include shelter management, safety patrol, janitorial services, and transportation operations.

Experience and Education Required:

  • Experience working with vulnerable populations, including families and individuals in crisis.
  • Highschool diploma or GED

Experience and Education Preferred:

  • Previous experience in shelter, housing, or direct service environments preferred.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must pass background check
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S.
