About This Position

Under the general supervision of the Police Lieutenant or his/her designee to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks for the police department.

Kennel Attendant is a regular part-time (up to 10 hours per week), entry level position. Work is done under the general supervision of the Police Lieutenant or his/her designee, but some job assignments may be performed with minimal guidance and supervision with the expectations that incumbents have the ability to choose among alternatives in completing tasks. Work is typically performed outside and may include work in inclement weather. Duties include maintenance of the animal control facility, and care of animals, mostly dogs and cats including possible exposure to vicious animals, rabies and other diseases.
Primary duties are to clean the exterior and interior of the animal control facility at the City’s corporation yard, and care of animals held at the facility. Additional duties to include transporting animals to and from veterinary offices and animal rescue. Other duties as required.

SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS
  • This position is part-time (up to 10 hours per week) and is FLSA non-exempt
  • Not represented by any employee association.

  • Use equipment such as small hand tools, catch poles, nets and protective equipment.

  • Catch, transport and restrain animals without harm to self, animals, or other people.

  • Be punctual, alert and responsible.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.
  • Understand and follow oral and/or written instructions, policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations.
  • Operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using software applications appropriate to assigned tasks; as
  • applicable.
  • Use logical thinking and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written directions or oral instructions.
  • Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under pressure of deadlines and changing
  • priorities.
  • Quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
  • Act with integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Maintain a valid California Driver’s License throughout employment. Incumbent will participate in the DMV “Pull Program”.
  • Employees must be at least 18 years of age to operate a City vehicle or personal vehicle for work-related purposes, as required by Redwood Empire Municipal Insurance Fund (REMIF), the City’s self-funded insurance pool.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
There are no educational prerequisites for this position. Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities would be previous experience involving maintenance or custodial duties and experience in working with animals.
