About This Position

The medical assistant provides routine medical procedures and assists the physician/nurse practitioner/psychiatrist with routine preparation for various procedures and exams for mentally ill consumers and their families. This position collaborates with the physician, nurse practitioner, psychiatrist, primary therapist, case manager and allied team members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to the following:

  1. Assists in day-to-day activities to create efficient, effective patient experience.
  1. Reports to work on time as scheduled and at the location assigned.
  2. Completes all required trainings within established timeframes.
  3. Completes all other duties as assigned and meets quality expectations.
  4. Obtain patient vital signs.
  5. Medication reconciliation and updating health history.
  6. Reports necessary information to physician/nurse practitioner and other staff to allow for the development of client treatment goals and objectives when medical intervention is indicated.
  7. Rooming patients.
  8. Referrals for specialists.
  9. Telephone follow-up for non-emergent testing results.
  10. Setting up examination equipment, i.e., well-woman exam.

Provides routine medical procedures/testing.

  1. Schedule appointments.
  2. Administer pulmonary functioning testing (PFT); spirometry.
  3. Administer EKG testing.
  4. Vaccine & injectable medication administration.
  5. Administer other testing as trained, indicated and appropriate.

Documents activities in electronic medical record.

  1. Makes chart notes of pertinent information obtained during visit.
  2. May provide primary care coordination for treatment planning.
  3. Completes all required documentation within established timeframes.
  4. Records and charts any injectables.
  5. Observes clients for side effects of medications, and reports concerns to staff physician/nurse practitioner.
  6. Follow-up with patients regarding test results & messages.

Responsible for staying current in the field and up-to-date on LBS policies.

The Medical Assistant utilizes relevant data (history, vital signs) to identify member needs and determine appropriate notification to primary care provider. Utilizes safe and effective strategies to ensure quality, error-free injection administration and clinical testing (A1c, blood glucose, etc.

The Medical Assistant reviews data and input from others prior to decision-making. Considers potential risk/benefit to agency, program, team members and consumers. Consults with primary care provider and supervisor prior to executing changes. Makes sound coordinated decisions and implements necessary and ongoing changes to improve primary care efficiency and consumer/family satisfaction.

The Medical Assistant develops a robust understanding of the CMH landscape and population (intent, purpose –treatment of severe mental illness SMI, chronicity of physical and mental health conditions) and its impact relative to (Federal and State) funding and MDHHS provider rules. Develops strategies to strengthen value-focused service delivery.

QUALIFICATIONS - To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE – Medical Assistant from a certified school/college/program is required. Ability to effectively treat consumers with mental illness using time limited treatment modalities, and quality care services. Preferred 2 years experience in working with the mentally ill population.

LANGUAGE SKILLS - Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to establish professional working relationships with all staff. Appropriately articulates the view of the agency when networking in the community.

CREDENTIALING, LICENSURE. Certified as Medical Assistant in the State of Michigan.
