Reports to: Chemistry/Immunology Supervisor
Position Summary
Observes protocols and methods established by the Department of Laboratories, including the accessioning routine for proper
identification and processing of such specimens. Performs other duties as assigned, in the chemistry department.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:
1. Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
2. Attend staff meetings and in-services.
3. Complete competency requirements.
4. Demonstrate ability to maintain a safe environment and use universal precaution.
5. Ability to obtain blood specimens using varied technique on all age groups (where applicable).
6. Proficient in the use of the laboratory information system and hospital information system (where applicable).
7. Process specimens to be sent to reference laboratories.
8. Troubleshoot reference lab problems relating to specimens and/or test requisitions with appropriate follow-up.
9. Maintain reference lab and outstanding specimen logs.
10. Maintain and stock inventory of reference supplies.
11. Prepare and dispense 24 hour urine containers with proper preservative.
12. Make appropriate decisions independently.
13. Prioritize workload.
14. Inform management of problems.
15. Maintain confidentiality of patient data.
16. Answer incoming phone calls for the chemistry department and route appropriately.
17. Centrifuge samples for the Chemistry section.
18. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements
ï‚· Education: High School graduate or GED. Basic computer skills. In-service training on LIS and HIS computer systems
ï‚· Experience: Previous experience in a healthcare environment is preferred.

(Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
