About the Role

This is a hybrid role in the National Capital Region (NCR) - onsite expected 1-2 days/week. The client is located at the Washington Navy Yard (WNY) and additional onsite presence may be required for initial training and ad hoc for key meetings. A Secret clearance is required.

This role supports the Department of Navy (DON) Manpower & Reserve Affairs (M&RA) in administration of benefits for veteran warfighters. In this role the candidate would process Barring Act Waiver (BAW) claims related to Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC) which provides military Retirees a tax-free monthly compensation that is intended to replace some or all of the retired pay that is withheld due to receipt of VA compensation. CRSC is payable for disabilities that are found to be related to combat, including disabilities that were incurred in actual combat, while engaged in hazardous service, in the performance of duty simulating war, training for combat or as a result of an instrumentality of war.

What You'll Do

  • Provide support for the processing and tracking of BAW(31 U.S.C. 3702), including preparing waiver packages, coordinating and reviewing supporting documentation, maintaining files and communicating with other Department of Defense Agencies and Congressional and Senatorial Offices of Constituent Affairs in order to obtain information about the claim or contact the constituent regarding the status or outcome of the claim.
  • Support the overall management of BAW to include submission reviews, processing claims, and tracking for the Department of the Navy. Work will involve the coordination with stakeholders such as Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS).
  • Develop process improvements for the BAW program

Job Requirements

  • Experience as a paralegal, legal admin, claims analyst or researcher, or similar
  • Growth mindset: possesses intrinsic motivation for personal and professional development
  • Critical thinking: ability to analyze information objectively, identify relevant facts, and apply sound judgment to solve problems
  • Attention to detail: strong proofreading skills for claims documents, ensuring accuracy in names, dates, and case details.
  • Organizational skills: ability to organize, file, and retrieve claims documents accurately (both physical and digital).
  • Writing and Communication skills: professional written and verbal communication for client interactions and correspondence with military stakeholders
  • Research Competency: ability to conduct basic relevant research using both databases and stakeholder interviews, and summarize findings clearly

Additionally, all candidates must possess a minimum of a Secret clearance. Due to the hiring timeline, candidates without a clearance will NOT be considered at this time.

The pay range for this role is:
57,000 - 85,000 USD per year(Hybrid (Washington, District of Columbia, US))
