About Pet and Home Care
Pet and Home Care is a 27-year-old, woman-owned pet care company serving Frederick and Montgomery Counties. We have grown from a single in-home pet sitting business into a complete care system, tip to tail, with five departments under one roof: In-Home Pet Care, Grooming, Retail, Small Dog Daycare, and Dog Training. We have served more than 10,000 pet parents, employ nearly 60 team members, and our Urbana location is the heart of everything we do.
The Store Manager role is a leadership seat for someone who wants to run a real operation, work directly with the owner on growth, and build something that lasts.
The Role
As Store Manager, you are the on-site operational leader of our Urbana location. You own the day-to-day execution of four of our five departments, Grooming, Retail, Small Dog Daycare, and Dog Training.
You are the face of the store, the leader on the floor, and the operator responsible for service quality, team performance, and a welcoming, high-trust experience for every pet parent who walks in. The In-Home Pet Care department is managed separately by our In-Home Care Managers, so your focus stays on the storefront.
What You Will Own
Team Leadership
- Lead a multi-department team of more than 10 animal enthusiasts across grooming, retail, daycare, and dog training
- Hire, onboard, train, schedule, and coach your floor team
- Hold standards, give feedback in real time, and build a culture people stay for
Grooming Operations
- Oversee a professional grooming team, including check-in and check-out flow, appointment quality, and rebooking
- Resolve escalated grooming concerns with care and judgment
- Hold groomer schedules, productivity standards, and client experience to a high bar
Retail and Inventory
- Run a multi-vendor retail floor and ecommerce store with a large active SKU count across food, treats, supplements, supplies, and wellness
- Manage merchandising, restocking, signage, and floor presentation
- Monitor sell-through, top and bottom performers, shrink, and margin
- Place and track special orders, coordinate vendor deliveries, and execute local delivery and loyalty programs
Small Dog Daycare and Dog Training
- Ensure safe, well-supervised daycare operations and a strong client experience
- Support our professional trainer with scheduling, client communication, and class flow
Business Performance
- Partner directly with the CEO on revenue, labor, and service goals
- Use weekly reports to identify opportunities and act on them
- Help us grow foot traffic, retail revenue, and grooming volume in a way that compounds
What You Bring
- 3 or more years managing a pet retail or specialty retail operation
- Direct experience overseeing or working closely with a professional grooming team
- Proven inventory management for a multi-vendor, multi-category retail floor
- A real track record of hiring, coaching, and retaining a team of 10 or more
- Comfort with POS, scheduling, and inventory software.
- Strong client service judgment, the kind that calms situations rather than escalates them
- Genuine love of pets and respect for the trust pet parents place in us
- Physical ability to be active throughout shifts and lift up to 60 pounds
Why This Role
- Real scope. Four departments, a team of more than 10, direct partnership with the owner
- A 27-year foundation with deep client loyalty, not a turnaround project
- A complete care system that genuinely differentiates us from big-box pet retail
- Room to grow. We are actively investing in systems, marketing, ecommerce the storefront experience
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range of $55,000 to $65,000, based on experience
- Discretionary performance bonus
- W-2 employment with biweekly direct deposit
- 401(k) with employer match (eligible after 60 days)
- Paid time off
- 20 percent employee discount on all retail products
- Discounted pet care services for your own pets
- Paid training, certifications, and ongoing professional development
