Job Description

We’re making payments the most powerful tool in commerce—come build with us.

Most engineering job descriptions read like a checklist of frameworks and tickets. This one is different. At pmtbox (“Payment Box”), we’re building a fintech platform that manages payments-related risk, fraud, chargebacks, card declines, and related operational workflows for retail clients. We’re a VC-backed fintech with a small team, over 1,000 active clients, and big ambitions, and we’re looking for engineers who want to build systems, not just components. We’re looking for a Javascript Component Framework Engineer who wants to help architect and scale the frontend systems that power complex operational workflows and enterprise customer experiences.

If you’ve spent your career endlessly wiring together UI tickets in heavily layered organizations … this role might feel very different. We’re looking for engineers who:

  • Build systems and reusable frameworks, not just pages
  • Think deeply about developer experience and maintainability
  • Enjoy creating scalable UI architecture and component patterns
  • Use AI as a force multiplier in their development workflow
  • Think beyond frontend visuals and into workflows, and operational systems for internal and eternal users
  • Care about performance, reliability, usability, and long-term scalability

What You Might Work On

You’ll be building real products alongside founders, including a technical co-founder with deep industry experience and expertise, and a small, high-performing engineering team. Expect to:

  • Design and build reusable Javascript component systems and frontend architecture, including user experiences and tactile visualization components
  • Develop scalable UI frameworks that support complex operational workflows
  • Create internal frontend tooling and developer experience improvements
  • Build highly interactive interfaces for enterprise operations and payments workflows
  • Partner closely with full stack engineers across Rails/Postgres systems
  • Improve frontend testing and application infrastructure
  • Build integration widgets and customer-facing operational tooling
  • Use and refine AI-assisted development workflows and tools
  • Contribute to architectural decisions as our platform and intelligence layers grow in size and scope
How Our Engineering Team Works

This is not a role where everything is already defined, but it’s also not greenfield. You’ll be building within established systems and patterns while helping evolve them over time. Our engineering team is intentionally small and high-ownership. We currently support over 1,000 active clients across a Rails/Postgres stack with AI-assisted development workflows integrated into daily work. We maintain a tests-first culture, CI pipelines, and structured project context that keeps both humans and AI tools oriented. This isn't a “move fast and break things” environment. It’s a “move fast because the guardrails are good” kind of environment. You’ll have real autonomy within well-defined boundaries: clear architectural patterns, tested systems, collaborative decision-making in real time, and documentation that allows you to ship independently without constant oversight.

What We’re Looking For

We care less about years of experience and more about how you think and solve problems, and what you’ve built. You might be a great fit if you:

  • Have strong experience building modern Javascript applications and component systems
  • Can design reusable, scalable frontend architecture rather than just individual screens
  • Think beyond coding and into systems, workflows, maintainability, and developer experience
  • Can show things you’ve built yourself: frameworks, design systems, side projects, automation tooling, GitHub projects, or internal tooling work
  • Care deeply about clean architecture, supportability, usability, performance, and scalability
  • Are curious about how AI changes how software gets built

We use AI-assisted development workflows daily as part of our core infrastructure. We’re looking for engineers who’ve already started building their own workflows and can demonstrate:

  • A project where AI assistance measurably changed your development speed or approach
  • How you support AI workflows with scripts, tooling, validation, or structured context
  • Knowledge of how to feed context and data into AI tools to improve output quality
  • A workflow you built to validate or test AI-generated output
  • Situations where AI failed confidently and how you built safeguards around it

We want engineers who understand where AI accelerates workflows and where human judgment still matters.

The Kind of Engineer Who Thrives Here

You’ll probably enjoy this role if you:

  • Like solving new, sometimes ambiguous problems
  • Prefer building over excessive meetings
  • Have architected systems without being told exactly what to do
  • Enjoy improving workflows, tooling, and developer experience
  • Want real ownership of what you build
  • Always wanted to push the envelope on new, tactile user experiences
  • Care about long-term quality, not just short-term delivery
Our Stack (and What We’re Exploring)

Our team works across modern backend and frontend technologies and is constantly experimenting with better tools and workflows. Current and emerging technologies include:

  • Javascript / Typescript
  • Modern component-based frontend frameworks
  • Ruby / Rails / Postgres / Redis
  • AI-assisted development workflows
  • Modern cloud infrastructure and frontend testing and CI/CD workflows

We’re far more interested in how you solve problems than whether you’ve used a specific framework.

Why Join pmtbox
  • Early-stage fintech with real momentum and VC-backing by Tandem Ventures (Founders of fintech unicorns Divvy, Finicity, etc.). Small team, high ownership.
  • Work on meaningful ecommerce and payments infrastructure and build alongside founders and experienced operators in a five-days-a-week in-office culture
  • Opportunity to help shape frontend architecture and engineering systems as the company scales
  • Competitive compensation and benefits package including enterprise-level medical, dental, vision, 401(k), and generous time off
