Job Description

Milk Bank Technician

Monday-Friday 730am-4pm

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Milk Bank Lab Technician is responsible for performing specific tasks related to the preparation and pasteurization of donor human milk treatments. The pasteurized and cultured negatives treatments are supplied to CHKD, additional purchasing hospitals, and outpatient recipients. The recipients of the treatments are primarily extremely premature and critically infants in the intensive care unit setting, as well as medically fragile infants in the home setting, and well newborns. Reports to department leadership.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains a safe, clean, and sanitary work area.
  • Prepares, manages, sanitizes, and calibrates equipment used in milk handling and pasteurization.
  • Follows established policies and national standards to execute all steps of donor human milk processing.
  • Monitors for and prevents cold chain breaches during handling, processing, and storage.
  • Prevents physical, biological, or chemical contamination of the donor human milk and the work environment.
  • Monitors and maintains clear, accurate records of all phases of milk handling and pasteurization to ensure that critical control points are achieved, and quality assurance requirements are met.
  • Prepares and delivers human milk cultures to the CHKD Microbiology lab daily.
  • Works independently and as part of a team to process budgeted volumes of donor human milk.
  • Crossed trained to perform the checking in of raw milk donations and assist with the dispensation of pasteurized donor human milk as needed.
  • Manages the lab computer database and network drives.
  • Requires on the job training of Good Manufacturing Practices set forth by the FDA, National HMBANA (Human Milk Banking Association of North America) guidelines, DNV requirements and department specific Food Safety Plans and Policies.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

OTHER DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • Required Licenses and/or Certifications
    • Food Handler Certification required.
    • Good Manufacturing Practices Certification within 60 days of hire required.
    • Food Safety Manager Certification within 6 months of hire required.
  • Preferred Licenses and/or Certifications
    • None preferred.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Required Education and Experience
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • At least 1-3 years of experience with food handling required.
  • Preferred Education and Experience
    • Experience with formula or human milk preparation preferred.
    • Experience in a healthcare related technical role preferred (laboratory, dietary, medication, pharmacy, care partner, medical assistant, etc.).
  • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Basic computer skills necessary for effective data recording.
    • Requires ability to learn Guidelines for Human Milk Banking as developed by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Milk bank pasteurization area with exposure to disinfecting chemicals, human biological secretions (expressed human milk), storage/handling/shipping of class 9 hazardous materials (dry ice), and intermittent exposure to high ambient heat during pasteurization ( >100F) and extreme cold (-30C) freezers.
