Title: Staff Accountant

Reports to: Director of Finance

Employment Information: Full time, 12-month non union position

Job Summary

The Staff Accountant is responsible for performing a wide range of accounting functions to support the financial operations of the school. This position maintains accurate financial records, assists with month-end and year-end closing processes, processes accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, reconciles accounts, supports audits, and helps ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and school financial requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform duties in all areas of accounting for the school
  • Process billing, verify and/or complete receivable collections.
  • Process invoices, verify and / or complete vendor invoice payments.
  • Post transactions and categorize records in the general ledger
  • Performs month and year end close of assigned areas.
  • Process bank deposits, record banking transactions, and reconcile bank accounts.
  • Assist with annual financial audits and other compliance reviews as needed.
  • Comply with federal, state, local and school policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Support compliance with state and federal funding requirements.
  • Collaborate with school employees, administrators and external agencies regarding billing and financial matters.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial and employee information.
Requirements:

Qualifications and Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred. An Associate's degree with at least three years of progressively responsible accounting experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of two years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit, educational, governmental, or public-sector environment.
  • Experience with SAGE MIP or other accounting software preferred. Ability to learn new financial systems quickly
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to details and accuracy.
  • Understanding of and the ability to adhere to generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office with exceptional knowledge of Excel and Excel based programs.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and identify discrepancies.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Commitment to excellent customer service when working with staff, vendors, school districts, and outside agencies.
